Escogido:

In Hattrick, overconfidence is an event that happens when a team severely underestimates their series opponent and thus performs worse than it normally would. This usually happens when a team leading the series is playing a team in the bottom part of the table; the event can happen for any league game from the second week until the last game of the season. Overconfidence does not happen in cup or friendly matches.

The overconfidence check is done once before the match; if there is overconfidence, there will be a message about the players' attitude before the match begins. The affected teams midfield rating is reduced an estimated 15-20%. It is possible for the coach to amend the effects of overconfidence during the match break; if so, there is a mention in the match report at the beginning of the second half. However, this can only happen if the overconfident team is losing at half time.

Based on some research, overconfidence can happen when a team with a strong or better confidence plays a team at least five places below it in the series table. It is not clear yet whether winning streak is a factor, or if the number of sports psychologists is, although HT-Tjecken explained on Global that psychologists should be fired in cases where possible overconfidence can lead to problems:

Q: So overconfidence can happen more often. To prevent it I should hire the maximum number of psychologists, not fire them?

A: Psychologists boost your confidence, they're not at all useful to lower it. So I should sack them in case of overconfidence and not hire more.

However, it is perfectly possible for overconfidence to happen with no psychologists hired at all neither the week of the match nor the week before.

In some cases, overconfidence is not much of a problem because the winning team would win anyway; sometimes, however, an overconfidence event could decide to whom goes the series medal. Teams so affected decry their luck.

There are several confidence levels listed in the Denominations that sound like the team is acting overconfident (slightly exaggerated, extremely exaggerated and completely exaggerated), however, for some reason these never appear on the web pages nor in the XML files downloaded by CHPP applications. It might be related to such confidence levels being only reached while matches with overconfidence events are played, but due to the fact that team data is unavailiable to download while matches are played, and the web pages hide confidence at that time, these denominations stay pretty much unused.

The previous paragraph stood before the 30th season changes; it is yet to discover how this will work in the season to come.

'Short updates' can be surprisingly devious in Hattrick. Normally these are supposed to be of a relatively little importance, serving to perform some simple maintenance tasks. The one on Wednesday, July 12th, 2006 however ended up with an unprecedented downtime of two and a half days, and a full system restore had to be made to the point right after the league matches were played. Unfortunately, for many managers this also meant losing friendly matches, and sometimes even losing the training altogether due to the lack of the lineup for the appropriate friendly and cup matches, since many mid-week matches were played with a default lineup. The same applied to the national teams, many of which had the match played with a default lineup and no team attitude/tactic settings. All transfers have also been cancelled, thus leading to teams being locked for failing to gather the required money before the deadline; fortunately, this has been amended by the HT-team who gave one additional week for such teams to collect the required finances.

For the above reason of short updates the Hattrick managers are advised to plan in ahead as much as possible, including booking your friendly early and setting a valid lineup for the friendly/cup match right after it has been booked.

Beware when you see a short update announced on the main Hattrick page!

The message numbers in the 'Guestbook section' are off.

For example, a guestbook containing 98 messages (as of 25.09.2005) has the following pager part:

Next 10

98-78 78-58 58-38 38-18 18-1

It's obvious that the step used is 20 and not 10. Also this should normally read 98-79 78-59 or 98-89, 88-79 etc. -- not the way it is done on the guestbook page.

Also, on the first page shown are the messages from #98 down to #89, i.e. the last 10 messages. Clicking on the '98-78' link lists them again, instead of the 21 message indicated here. After that the step is 20: clicking on the 78-58 link, for example, lists the messages from #79 to #59.

Loss of formation experience due to transfers
The rules state that you risk losing formation experience when selling a player. Untill some time ago this used to work fine, but it seems to be switched off completely. When playing different formations the experience level still chanches, but it doesn't react to sold players whatsoever.
The &quot;switching off&quot; of this feature seems to coincide with the severe server problems in March 2006.

Character counter in edit boxes
When typing press announcements, guestbook messages or HT mails, the number of characters is limited, but the counter indicating the number of characters left is a little off sometimes. This may result in the loss of the last couple of character of your message. One possible reason for this is that the character counter might not be handling CR/LF character pairs properly. Also, it is possible that the character counter doesn't take into account the title of the announcement or message, which is included in the character count calculation.

High confidence values never show
The denominations for confidence include slightly exaggerated, completely exaggerated and extremely exaggerated which hint at possible overconfidence. However, the highest confidence listed on the training page is wonderful. It is unclear whether this is due to a presentation bug, or these values are unreachable with the current game engine, or they can only be reached during matchtime, when team confidence is not shown.

Challenges misspelled in page name
It's challanges.asp.

Last club money is paid to the teams that change owners
When a player is sold that has played some games in his previous owner team, then that team is entitled to a certain small % of his sale price. If the previous owner team (referred to as the "last owner" in the rules) has changed owners since then, the money will go to the new owner, which sometimes amounts for a lot of cash for a most likely starting team. This works for mother club money as well.

Teams with 2+ top scorers get 2+ top scorer bonus messages
If two or more players are tied for the top scorer award in a series, and they both belong to the same team, that team receives one message saying "You receive the top scorer bonus" for each player, thus seemingly awarding that bonus more than once. However, the bonus is actually paid once, as it should according to the rules.

International challenge that's already booked cannot be accepted message
Do not list bugs that can be abused by other managers -- these should be mailed to your local GMs instead!

Guestbook message numbers

The rules state that you risk loosing formation experience when selling a player. Untill some time ago this used to work fine, but it seems to be switched off completely. When playing different formations the experience level still chanches, but it doesn't react to sold players whatsoever.
The &quot;switching off&quot; of this feature seems to coïncide with the severe server problems in march 2006.

Sneak-peek ignores blocklist
If a message from a blocked user appears in a thread displayed by the 'Sneak-peek' function, that message's contents would be displayed.

Also, it is possible that the character counter doesn't include the title of the announcement or message, which is included in the character count calculation.

Early Wednesday the message looks like this:
Challenges: 1
[team name]
Venue: [arena, rules]. Booked! The challenge cannot be accepted right now! International friendlies can only be arranged from Thursday to Tuesday.

Team spirit loss due to transfers
It seems that when you buy or sell a player and that adversely affects your team spirit, sometimes there is a message printed under 'The Club' menu but no visible team spirit changes happen, and sometimes vice versa (i.e. the team spirit drops but there is no message). This might be related to a possible bug in the part of the script that chooses to print the message or not depending on whether the rounded team spirit value changed.

It is worth noting, however, that team spirit has subslevels, so this may not be a bug.

Every value in Hattrick is represented by a decimal number, including team spirit. Each level is a decimal range (4.0000 to 4.9999 for example). Team spirit changes every daily update, always moving toward the "normal" level (composed). Changes to TS from transfers are noted on your "the club" page, but the daily change of team spirit is not noted on that page. So your TS will sometimes change in between competitive matches without a transfer occuring, which means that it's not noted. Also, many transfers do not involve a change to your TS. If it does change your TS, it changes it by a decimal number: if your TS was low within the sublevel, then your TS will drop a level. If it was high within the sublevel, then your TS will not appear to change. However, your TS has indeed changed. This is not a bug.

Sneak-peek ignores blocklist
If a message from a blocked user appears in a thread displayed by the 'Sneak-peek' function, that message's contents would be displayed.

Challenges misspelled in page name
Osmosis training

Escogido: added origins of the word osmosis

Osmosis training is one of the names given to the small amount of training all players receive if not played in the correct position for that training type. As mentioned in the rules with ((others)). Note that players do not receive this training with goalkeeping training.
This small amount of training is estimated to be around 1/6 of the training a player receives that played on the right position for that training type.

Some managers try to profit from this phenomenon by buying a lot of players with a very high sub-level. If done correctly the small amount of training will do to make a player pop within a couple of weeks. Then the player will be sold for a profit. This is a type of skill trading with the noticable difference that players are not fielded at all.<br>
However, it takes considerable skill and experience from the manager to spot players with a sufficient high sub level in the first place, and second make a good profit trading them.

The term 'osmosis training' is somewhat of a take-off on the "learning by osmosis" joke where someone puts a book on their head and the knowledge is transported from the region of high concentration, the book, to the region of low concentration, the head. The process of such transportation through a thin membrane is known in biology and physics as osmosis. Of course the carry-over training isn't exactly the same thing, certainly, but the conceptual similarity is there.

Also known as...
Shadow Training (English)
Since the players given osmosis training "shadow" the players getting the main training.

Fusion Training (English)
Because it sounded cool(?).

Residual Training (English)
Fairly straightforward name. A residual is the amount left over after a process. 1

Klaverjas Training (Dutch)
Derived from a cardgame that was popular among proffesional players in Holland. It was played to kill time during training camps and long busrides and they used to bet quite heavily on the cards. Because not everyone could stand losing or felt obliged to pay their debts, this sometimes resulted in a bit of tension, even to the extent that players were forbidden to play klaverjas anymore by their coaches.

Since players bought for the sole purpose of recieving osmosis training only sit around in the canteen or on the bench, they have plenty of time for cardgames. And because of the frequent transfers and subsequent TS-drops, the team spirit will suffer from this cardplaying bunch of guys. So the link with the cardplaying incidents was easily made.

The fact that he was pulled as a goalkeeper but still had winger as his best skill in combination with his somewhat silly name triggered a lot of jokes about him. The jokes continued and Bob slowly developed into a cult hero among some members of the Hattrick Team.

When player faces were implemented in the game Bob was tweaked into an easter-egg, with changing faces. At this point he was also made a beloved team member. Presently Bob is the only such player in the game. His agreeability however does not give his team any benefits since his leadership is too low.
This page is used together with the Ideas, Approved ideas and the Rejected ideas pages. When editing, please make sure that the contents of these pages match each other.

The purpose of this page is to provide the list of what might constitute a bug in a game for the Hattrick team to correct.

If something you believe is obviously wrong, please post it here.

Do not list bugs that can be abused by other managers -- these should be mailed to your local GMs instead!

Guestbook message numbers

Sneak-peek ignores blocklist
If a message from a blocked user appears in a thread displayed by the 'Sneak-peek' function, that message's contents would be displayed.

Number of allowed challenges is 1 off
The rules state that you can only have 25 active challenges at a time, but you are actually allowed to have 26.

Early Wednesday the message looks like this:
Challenges: 1
[team name]
Venue: [arena, rules]. Booked! The challenge cannot be accepted right now! International friendlies can only be arranged from Thursday to Tuesday.

Selling or Buying Players
Selling players
In order to sell a player you have to place him on the transfer list. When doing this, you must also choose a category from goalkeeper to forward, and set an asking price. Note that most people will search by skills whichever category you select, so it doesn't matter much what player category you place him in.

You have to declare a starting price for the player. This is the lowest amount for which you're prepared to let him go. He'll be on the transfer list 3 days before going to the club that has offered the most for him. There are various theories regarding the value of starting prices, with some people feeling players should always be listed for 0, whilst others prefer listing for the minimum price they feel is acceptable.

A sold player disappears off to his new club immediately after the bidding is over (although note this may take some time, particularly if the servers are busy). If a buyer isn't found he stays at your club. If you have placed a player on the transfer list you MAY NOT change your mind! He's there for 3 days, and that's that! Also, keep in mind that all information on the player's abilities will be made common knowledge when you place him on the transfer list.

You may select a player for the team even if he is on the transfer list; however, if he is sold by the time the match starts, a substitute player will take his place at the pitch. If a player is sold during a match, he will finish the match and then leave.

After every completed deal, the player's agent, mother club, and last club will all take their cut of the sale price. The exact amount you will receive depends on how long the player has been with your club. The most you can expect is 93%. It will cost you € 1 000 to place a player on the transfer list, which is not refunded if he isn't sold. Note: If you are selling one of your own youth players you are not considered the previous owner - but the next time he is sold you will receive previous club money (if he has played a match for your team) as well as 2% of the sale price for being the mother club. After that you will only receive money for being the mother club whenever the player is sold. The sale of a player after more than exactly six days (= 144 hours) from being pulled from the youth squad may result in a loss of team spirit.

Buying players
In order to buy a player from another club you have to visit Hattrick's player market, under the Transfers menu. This is where you'll find out who's for sale. You can only buy players on the transfer list. You can't buy, or exchange, for that matter, players directly from another club. If you don't see a player that you like in your country's local market - you can search either an individual country or by one of eight regions, these are all available from the drop-down box on the transfer search page.

When you've found a player you want, click on his name and you'll enter his player page. This is where you may place your offer. You must raise the bid by € 1 000 or 2% more, whichever is greater.

Note that the sum of your bids cannot put you more than € 200 000 into debt.

Bids must be raised by at least € 1 000 or 2%, depending on which amount is bigger. Only full multiples of € 1 000 counts, e.g. a bid of € 1 999 may be overbid by a € 2 000 bid. You may bid on a player right up until the deadline. If someone places an offer less than 3 minutes before the deadline, the deadline will be extended for another 3 minutes. This continues until only one bidder remains and no other bidders raise the stakes before the stated deadline time. A sale is confirmed when the words "Bidding is finished" appear beneath the selling price. Also, when you win a bid, if the new player does not get along with his teammates, you may see team spirit decrease.

Keep in mind that the server might be down just as the deadline is running out. You'll be taking a chance by waiting until the last minute before making your move. If the server is down, you're to blame for not acting earlier.

A great help when buying players is the information concerning his abilities, personality etc. You may also want to consider a player's TSI, or Total Skill Index. However, the current market value of a player may differ greatly from what his TSI might lead you to expect as, above all, it's his top ability (or abilities) that is most relevant - a player being "world class" at something and "weak" in all other abilities will fetch a higher market price than one who is solid at everything. Remember that even if current form doesn't have a lot of impact on the market value, it will matter for his next couple of games. An expensive player won't necessarily be the saviour you need to get your team out of a tight spot. If you wish, you can use the Transfer Compare button in order to see what a similar player has recently been sold for on the market.

Fair Play in the Transfer Market
Good players and money are key aspects in Hattrick, which makes it very important that no teams benefit from abnormal activities on the transfer market. This means that all bids should be in relevance to what could be considered reasonable for the player in question. Remember, it's not only prohibited to have several teams but also to "help" friends or family by buying players at inflated prices. The Game Masters are fully authorized to cancel or adjust abnormal prices, hand out fines to teams or even ban the users involved.

TS-Drop
Whenever you buy or sell a player there are chances for your team spirit to drop. This drop can be visible or invisible (due to the fact that it might not drop a full level), but when it happens there is always a message on "The Club" page.

Based on research

The PFO (AllianceID: 23565) examined the chances of getting a TS-drop with an input of over 650 transfers. It appears that only the agreeability of a player has influence on getting a TS-drop or not. The research gave us the following data:

Chance on a TS-drop

</tr>
<tr>
<td>Controversial person</td>
<td><div align="right">55%</div></td>
<tr>
<td>Nasty fellow</td>
</tr>
</table>

In total, you have the lowest chance on getting a TS-drop when you buy and sell only sympathetic guys.

Skills
Skills are a key aspect of Hattrick, determining how well the players play, and what wages you will have to pay them every week. they also determine the TSI of a player

In Hattrick, skill levels are shown as the terms ranging from disastrous to divine. In many situations it is convenient to use numerical skill values instead of terms, and these numbers can be found here.

Skill levels on Hattrick are alway rounded down. If you are interested in exact skill levels, check the subskills page.

Players may need different Skills depending on their position. There are primary, secondary and some are even talking of tertiary skills.

For example, a winger's main skill is wing: passing, playmaking and stamina are secondary skills. Defending would be considered a tertiary skill.

The Hattrick community often uses a-skill, b-skill and c-skill instead of primary, seconday and tertiary.

Stamina
Stamina is absolutely vital for any players who use playmaking. If a player does not have enough stamina, a serious drop in their playmaking contribution will be noticed, particularly during the second half of matches.

In addition to this main use, it is somewhat important for other players (see Special Event) and Pressing.

Playmaking
Together with stamina, Playmaking is the most important skill for inner midfielders and wingers played towards the middle. It is also used by wingers, defensive forwards and offensive central defenders. Offensive wingbacks use a tiny bit as well. As noted above, this skill is used in conjunction with stamina.

It can be trained by playmaking training.

Wing
Wing skill refers to the ability to create scoring opportunities by advancing down the sides. This is obviously most useful for wingers (a-skill), although Wingbacks also are able to profit from it. A forward toward wing will also benefit a lot from this skill.

The most effective training type to improve the wing skill is crossing.

Scoring
The ball is supposed to go into the net, and scoring ability makes sure it gets there. It is the most important ability for forwards, but not particularly important for anyone else. Any player with good scoring skill combined with good set pieces skill can score on a long shot special event.

The most efficient training type to improve scoring is scoring training.

Goalkeeping
Goalkeeping is the ability that goalkeepers use (and they need it a lot!) However, as it is the only skill they need, they rarely have any ability in other areas. The only other way to increase the performance of a goalkeeper other than goalkeeping training is to have him gain experience.

Passing
The scorer gets the credit, but the player giving him the decisive pass is just as important. Both forwards and midfielders, including wingers, profit from being good at this. Passing is also very important for use with tactics. It helps to compute ratings for Counter Attack, Attack on Wings and Attack in the Middle.

The training types to train passing are short passes and through passes.

Defending
Defending skill controls a player's ability to stop opponent's attacks. Unconditionally the most important ability for all types of defenders. Midfielders may also put this ability to good use. It is also relevant on all players when using the Pressing tactic.

The most efficient training type to increase the defending skill is Defending training

Set Pieces
One player is appointed for Set Pieces. He'll take all free kicks, corners, penalties, and in case of a penalty shoot-out, he'll take the first penalty. In all cases, lots of skill is needed in this area.

This skill can be trained through Set pieces training.

The affected teams's midfield rating is halved.

It is not clear yet whether winning streak is a factor, or if the number of sports psychologists is, although many web pages suggest that psychologists should be fired in cases where possible overconfidence can lead to problems.

The affected teams's midfield rating is halved.

It is not clear yet whether winning streak is a factor, or if the number of sports psychologists is, although many web pages suggest that psychologists should be fired in cases where possible overconfidence can lead to problems. However, it is perfectly possible for overconfidence to happen with no psychologists hired at all neither the week of the match nor the week before.

In some cases, overconfidence is not much of a problem because the winning team would win anyway; sometimes, however, an overconfidence event could decide to whom goes the series medal. Teams so affected decry their luck.
stub

Abilities of a coach
There are three different types of coach:

<ul>Tactics: "Offensive Coach", "Defensive Coach" or "Neutral Coach", affecting the teams' performance (and only performance) during the game.</ul>

The type of coach that is best for your team will largely depend on your training type. See Coach tactics for more information

Offensive coach
These coaches have a attacking nature and there for stimulate the team to play more offensive, i.e... boosting the teams attack ratings.

Defensive coach
Opposed to the offensive coach, these coaches have a defensive nature, i.e. boosting the team's defence ratings.

Neutral coach
These coaches have no offensive or defensive preferance, and therefore boost both the team's attack and defense ratings a little.

<ul>Skill: A talented coach knows the right methods of training, allowing young players to improve their abilities faster. Training (see Chapter 17) becomes more effective. The skill can never be better than excellent.</ul>

<ul>Leadership: Even if a coach is good at planning training activities, he might be a bad leader, not inspiring players to give top performances during games. The team spirit might be spoilt if the coach is a weak leader.</ul>

Changing the coach
If your coach disappoints you, you can always get a new one. There are two different ways to go:

Recruit a coach externally
Recruiting externally basically means that you hire a new coach. However, you first decide how good you want him to be (trainer skill and leadership) and what trainer type you want (one who favours attack, defence or is neutral).

Each combination of leadership/trainer skill has a fixed price. Then you "buy" him (he is taken from an unseen pool of unemployed coaches - coaches are not included on the transfer list.

Make player coach
This alternative can be somewhat cheaper than the external recruiting - if you have a player with the right coaching material.

There are a few restrictions: The player's experience determines how good a coach he can become. Also, the more experienced he is, the lower his price for a certain skill level. Players keep their leadership (already known to you) and you do not pay for their leadership - so, if you have a very experienced player with high leadership, this can be a real bargain.

However, to prevent daytrading of coaches-to-be, we have another restriction: The player must have been in your squad for a season (16 weeks) to be eligible to become your coach. While it will still be possible (in principle) to purchase a player in order to make him coach for a little less, it will require more than a season's foresight.

When you hire a new coach, he becomes the coach of your squad (when he arrives, which may take up to a minute after you ordered him) and the old coach stays in the squad (in case you want to keep him as player). If you don't want him, you will have to fire him. He can never become coach a second time for your team (although he may go to another team eventually). Also, you cannot sell a player who has become coach. This is important, as otherwise people would start trading coaches and that is not the kind of system we want. All new teams get initial coaches who are of equal skill level (weak).

Level of the coach
All new coaches of a certain skill level are equal. That is, if you purchase a coach with passable skill, he always becomes "average" passable. There is no "high passable" and "low passable". However, the increase in the coaches performance between levels is, like with regular player skills, non-linear. This means that the gap between a solid coach and an excellent coach is smaller than the gap between a passable coach and a solid coach in terms of the effect of the training, so a high-level coach might not always be the best solution for you. The common consensus on this matter is that a solid coach is both affordable and advisable for most managers.

Skills deterioration
Coaches will slowly have their leadership skills deteriorate. Deterioration will not start until the coach has been in the club for more than a season. HT's reasoning is a coach that might seem bustling with energy and inspiration when he first arrives, after a few seasons loses some of his "edge". He has simply grown bored with the job.

Finally, once a coach reaches disastrous leadership (and that would typically take perhaps 10 seasons for a coach starting with solid leadership), the deterioration starts hitting his trainer skills instead of the depleted leadership. Let us underline that the deterioration is very slow, although it will go somewhat faster for coaches with very high leadership, so a solid leader might go down to passable after 1-2 seasons (more likely after 2 seasons or more though).

Players who become coaches have an emergency surgical procedure and if they had any injuries, they are automatically healed!

Extreme formations are those formations that cannot retain routine from match to match. As a result, confusion events with these formations is quite common. The formations are considered to be extreme because they usually abandon one part of the field.

The three most common Extreme formations are:

*2-5-3
*5-2-3
*5-5-0

These three formations, and only these, will not sacrifice training for the week as long as they are played with at most three players at each position.

The squad using these formations must have a high experience level to counteract the confusion created by using a formation that is virtually new to the team, even if you use it every week, since it is impossible to raise the experience level of the formation. One notable exception is with 5-2-3 with two wingers and counterattack tactic; such teams don't want any possession at all, solely relying on their counterattacking ability to score. In this case the team wouldn't really suffer any ill effects of confusion, since midfield ratings don't matter.

Those listed above are the most common, but there are numerous other extreme lineups which have been used over the years such as 2-6-2 and 2-7-1. Please beware however that there is no way you can play any other Extreme formation than these three and still keep your weekly training.

About Team Names
As in real life, in Hattrick's world each team has its own individual name. The name of the team is its prime distinguish sign of other teams in Hattrick, as it is much easier to remember a name of a team, such as AC Milan or Manchester United, than an ID number (e.g. 340592).

Common Prefixes and Suffixes of Teams Around the World
*Sweden - IFK, IF, IK, BK, IS, BOIS, FK
*Netherlands - VV, FC, SC

Unique Team Names
In Hattrick's world, not all teams stick to a formula for names.

Special team names gives a unique flavour to Hattrick, and makes the game more enjoyable and personalised.

In the English speaking leagues, bad puns are always a favourite, as are names involving popular animals such as monkeys.

*Israel - Maccabi Schnitzel (340592); flotzim (153810) ["farts" in Hebrew].

*Oceania - The Frying Pigs
*USA - Can't Be Worse Than Liverpool (71615); Greedy Orphans Fighting and Biting (222208)

Guestbook message numbers

Sneak-peek ignores blocklist
If a message from a blocked user appears in a thread displayed by the 'Sneak-peek' function, that message's contents would be displayed.

Number of allowed challenges is 1 off
The rules state that you can only have 25 active challenges at a time, but you are actually allowed to have 26. Not that it matters much :)

Challenges misspelled in page name
It's challanges.asp. Just a misspell, I know.

* Exceeding the maximum squad size of 50 may cause a drop of the team spirit.
* In national teams changing the coach also may have negative or positive effect on the team spirit.

What Team Spirit Affects
Midfield ratings are affected by several factors. One of these factors is team spirit. The higher the team spirit, the better the midfield performs. And conversely, if team spirit is low, midfield ratings will lower. Team spirit also affects other parts of the field, although to a far lesser extent. A successful Hattrick manager will regulate his/her team spirit to get the best results for the team, as midfield is a very important factor in many matches.

In real life football the atmosphere around a team is of great influence on it's performance. If there is bad management or an incompetent coach this will have a negative effect on the way players feel and act on the pitch. In Hattrick this effect is represented by the Team Spirit.

The Team Spirit has a direct effect on the midfield strength of a team. The actual midfield strength based on players abilities is increased or decreased according to the Team Spirit. The midfield strength of both teams determines the distribution of chances, so a high Team Spirit will boost your midfield and deliver you more regular chances.

At the start of each season the Team Spirit is reset to a default level (composed). From then the actions of your club and your coach influence the rise and fall of the Team Spirit. Whatever you do Team Spirit is always trying to change back to composed. The leadership factor of your coach determines how fast it will change in that direction. A coach with high leadership will speed up the rate Team Spirit rises when below composed and slow down decrease in Team Spirit when above composed. The agreeability of the team leader also has an influence on the team spirit, a so called Clown has the highest possible influence. This influence is however only a small fraction of the influence of the coach.

Escogido: possible overconfidence denominations

In Hattrick, overconfidence is an event that happens when a team severely underestimates their series opponent and thus performs worse than it normally would. This usually happens when a team leading the series is playing a team in the bottom part of the table. Overconfidence does not happen in cup or friendly matches.

The overconfidence check is done once before the match; if there is overconfidence, there will be a message about the players' attitude before the match begins. The affected teams's midfield rating is halved. It is possible for the coach to amend the effects of overconfidence during the match break; if so, there is a mention in the match report at the beginning of the second half. However, this amending only happens when the overconfident team is losing.

Based on some research, overconfidence can happen when a team with a strong or better confidence plays a team at least 6 places below it in the series table. It is not clear yet whether winning streak is a factor, or if the number of sports psychologists is, although many web pages suggest that psychologists should be fired in cases where possible overconfidence can lead to problems.

Also, on the first page shown are the messages from #98 down to #89, i.e. the last 10 messages. Clicking on the '98-78' link lists them again, instead of the 21 message indicated here. This might be related to a possible bug in the part of the script that chooses to print the message or not depending on whether the rounded team spirit value changed.

It is possible for the coach to try to amend the effects of overconfidence during the match break, which is mentioned in the match report at the beginning of the second half.

There is not much known about exact effects of overconfidence, aside from the obvious drop in midfield ratings, and lower ball possession as the natural result. The rules state that high confidence may lead to overconfidence, and among confidence denominations there are slightly exaggerated, completely exaggerated and extremely exaggerated, hinting at possible overconfidence in the next match. There is however no way to see this, possibly because confidence is not shown during matches. It is also not known if the coach briefing during the break reverts the team to full strength or just eliminates some of the bad effects.
All ratings for this game are set to disastrous, however the player ratings are shown for the fielded players. If both teams don't field 9 players, the match result is recorded as a mutual walkover, a 0-0 draw.

Most of the time a walk-over opponent is good for an active team, because for the winning team, experience is gained, as is training, and in the same time there's no chance for the players to collect cards and suffer injuries. It also allows the active team to field the B squad and keep the best players for the cup match, if the team is still in the national Cup. However, in some cases the goal difference could be better and the goals don't count toward any of the winning team's players for the purposes of the top scorers competition. Nevertheless, these drawbacks are usually so small that the benefits outweight them by a huge margin.

To avoid walkovers, it's adviseable to set up and maintain a default lineup with enough players, preferrably full squad. That way, if you forget/are unable to give orders to your team for the match in time, at least you don't suffer the consequences of a walk-over.
These skills are Stamina, Playmaking, Wing, Scoring, Goalkeeping, Passing. Defending and Set Pieces. Each of these skills has a a value between disastrous and divine.

Form
Form is one of the most important characteristics for any player, determining how well he is able to use his skills. You'll note that a good player who is out of form will often be outperformed by a not so good player at the top of his game.

Experience
Some players may not have the greatest abilities, but their nouse and knowledge of the game more than makes up for it. Thus, old and experienced players often play much better than their younger, greener colleagues.

For a full discussion, click here.

Player Specialties
Some of the players in Hattrick have specialties that differentiate them from other players. A player may have only one specialty, and no more.

The five specialties are Head, Technical, Powerful, Quick and Unpredictable

To learn more about the diffrent specialties and how they affect the match, click here.

Personality
Finally, a player also has four personality characteristics, leadership, agreeability, honesty and aggressiveness.

Injury and Suspension
All this is well and good, but sometimes a player isn't able to play...

Injuries
It won't matter how good a player really is if he's not on form or is injured.<BR><BR>Sometimes players get injured. If this is the case, the injury, unless very slight, will put them on the treatment table for a couple of games. The risk of injuries increases as the team increases the intensity of training. Older players take longer to heal than young ones. You should also remember that the injury times stated are only estimates. A +1 injury could heal within 3 days with the assistance of doctors, but equally if your 35 year old star forward has a week-long injury, it might take him 10 or 11 days to get fit again.

For more information, see Injury

Yellow and red cards
Players may get booked or sent off during games. Two bookings during a match will automatically lead to the player being sent off. Bookings and Sending-Offs during competitive games eventually lead to a suspensions. A player will be suspended for the next match if he is sent off, or if he has accumulated 3 bookings during a season. This is shown by a red card symbol on the player page. You can also see how many yellow cards have been received so far. At the end of the season all cards are cleared.

Whilst a player can receive cards during friendly matches, they have no other effects than those seen during the game.

Highly aggressive players will tend to be booked more often than other players. Especially if they're also dishonest or lacking in experience.

Overview
Each club is run by a human manager who is solely responsible for hiring and firing players, staff and coaches, setting the formation and tactics for the competitive matches, and planning and implementing a long term training strategy.

Teams not run by humans are known as bot teams, or simply bots.

Each club plays a 16 week league (also called series) program. The first week game consists of the first round of the cup. The following 14 games are played against series opponents.

The last week is called by many people the 'off-season'. During this week, no league or cup games are played, but a number of updates happen. These include all players ageing by one year, all yellow cards being removed, and the mood of supporters and sponsors being reset.

During this week, the end of season promotion/relegation play-off games happen. These are known as qualification games.
Team Names
As in real life, in Hattrick's world each team has its own individual name, picked by the user on signing up. While each team has a unique ID number, team names are not necessarily unique. Some popular names are used by many teams.
It is always useful to research your next opponent by checking their previous games. There are several tools to assist in this. Details can be found on the Helper Applications page.

Escogido: /* Summary */

This page is used together with the Bugs, Approved ideas and the Rejected ideas pages. When editing, please make sure that the contents of these pages match each other.

Summary
Following is the list of the ideas that have been suggested by different Hattrick managers to the HT-team and no definite answer from a HT-staff member has been received.

The purposes of this page are:

* to provide the list of possible improvements to the game interface and the engine that the HT-team might want to consider.
* to keep managers from starting 'let's implement this' type of threads in the Global conference every time a new manager has the same bright idea that someone else submitted a week ago.

Please feel free to add your own ideas to the list and discuss them in the discussion page.

If a member of a HT-staff publicly (i.e. in the Global or some other Hattrick forum) explains that something cannot/would not be done, please move the idea to the Rejected ideas page along with the explanation, if any, possibly copying the post word by word. Otherwise, in the rare event that a HT-team member would announce that something could be done in the (hopefully nearest) future, it should be moved to the Approved ideas page, again with the post.

If something you believe is obviously wrong, please post it in the Bugs page. Do not post bugs that can be abused by other managers this way -- these should be mailed to your local GMs!

It is important to realize that small and/or cosmetic changes are much easier to implement while large changes that would require revamping major parts of the game would almost 100% likely fail to be approved. The reason for this is that the game is supposed to evolve at a low pace, otherwise many managers would get frustrated at the game constantly changing and quit.

Game interface
Game interface improvements go here.

Clickable links on players in the lineups in a match report.

Many interface improvements that available with the Foxtrick plugin, which does offer many of these improvements.

Player/coach pop/drop reports on Mondays and on training days into the The Club event list. Option: for supporters only.

Notebook: "delete my notes" link moved to a spot far away from the Save button :)

Match lineup: modify displayed text of individual orders so the page could show up on one page (without having to scroll; in English, "extra inner midfielder/central defender" is too long so the page is to be scrolled horizontally).

Player list: list on the right could have the player number prepended to the names (but not as a part of the link).

League standings: win-draw-loss coloumns. Option: in a separate list type (like "Old League tables").

My Hattrick: showing last/current match and league position (like the Supporters page but for the current team). Current economy balance and latest transfer list entry could also be displayed.

Match engine
Match engine suggestions go here. Please note that the changes in this area have the least chance to be implemented due to a variety of reasons.

Player names colored in their respective team colors. (yes like in foxtrick, but should work on the live match too). For a complete list of ideeas, visit: foxtrick website and see it's features + the features request in the forum

High set pieces skill for goalkeepers could increase the chance of saving a penalty. Pro: increasing popularity of set pieces training; most managers get a bit better game experience; more effort in transfer list browsing (for good SP goalkeepers) pays off. Con: Maybe national team goalkeepers are too strong anyway.

Chance of (some?) special events could be modified by player form in a non-linear manner. Eg. measuring to passable form as 100%, excellent form could enhance the chances to 120%, while poor form could decrease to 60%. The same with negative events but with a negated scale.

Economics
Economical suggestions go here. Please note that the changes in this area have the least chance to be implemented due to a variety of reasons.

Other
Everything else that doesn't fall in one of the above categories goes here.

Add moderation rights for the federation owners in their forums.

Add moderation rights for the federation owners to determine how long they want to ban someone from the fed.

Add a little counter next to the all flags that says how many flags that part has.

Supporters only: allow maximum amount to be set (e.g. 5/10/25/all) for friendly invitations.

Make it possible to change the teamname abbreviation while NOT changing the actual teamname. (In off-season; for normal costs)

Conferences: [off] HT-ML tag for offtopic text (to be displayed eg. in gray text, like the signatures)

Ability to turn My Hattrick event delete-on-read feature off. Option: for supporters only. Option 2: autodelete stays, but a new link/button appears with "keep this event in the event log" or sg. which un-deletes the event (ie. inserts it again, with eg. the text transferred with GET/POST so the DB delete could be executed anyway; security issues should be addressed however).

Guestbook message numbers

Sneak-peek ignores blocklist
If a message from a blocked user appears in a thread displayed by the 'Sneak-peek' function, that message's contents would be displayed.

The purposes of this page is to provide the list of what might constitute a bug in a game for the Hattrick team to correct.

If something you believe is obviously wrong, please post it here.

Do not list bugs that can be abused by other managers -- these should be mailed to your local GMs instead!

Guestbook message numbers

Sneak-peek ignores blocklist
If a message from a blocked user appears in a thread displayed by the 'Sneak-peek' function, that message's contents would be displayed.

Escogido: /* Expenses */

Revenues and Expenses
You need money to run your club. You pay the expenses and collect the income of the week every weekend. The exact time varies by league - check the league events for when it occurs in your league. The Economy page shows your budget for this week and last week's financial status. Note that all your income and expenses during the week are stacked and drawn from your account each weekend. For example, if you buy a player from the transfer list for 5 000 € the player is accessible immediately, the "temporary costs" entry is increased by 5 000 € but you still have the money in your account, for the time being. This also goes for income from attendance, which is paid a week after the entry (payment for cup matches is delayed by half a week).

There's nothing to keep you from spending money even if your balance is zero. You have a line of credit for 500 000 €, but you're going to have to pay some heavy interest on this borrowed money. If you run up debts amounting to 500 000 € you'll be given a bankruptcy warning and, as a result, you'll have severely limited access to Hattrick. If you do not return your balance to within the 500 000 € debt limit within one week of your bankruptcy warning, you may be forced to leave the Hattrick series system! However, long before you reach this limit your interest costs will have become insurmountable, so stay clear of that limit! Also remember that economists don't credit interest over 500 000 €, so don't count on them saving you.

Besides, you won't be allowed to purchase players if this will push your debts over 200 000 €. When you're about to place a bid the program will take into consideration other bids you've placed, and what's been offered for your own players listed for transfer.

In other words, think twice before you get yourself into debt!

Weekly Income / expenditure
Every week, during the updates, the following things occur:

Income
*Income from sponsors: Keep good relations with your sponsors and it will earn you a higher income.

*Income from attendance: Have you played a home match last round and/or had a match mid week? For details on how attendance income is calculated, look at the information at Arena.

*Financial income: Only for those with an economist on the payroll. (Really you need lots of money in the bank or huge debts to profit from hiring an economist). Economists can only help up to the point of bankruptcy, after that you're on your own.

*Temporary income: Some things give you extra income during the week, particularly player sales, but also membership fees from new supporters (they pay 30 € a person) may come in.

Expenses
*Costs for the squad: Each week you pay a wages for each player. If you're lucky to have an international player on your squad, and he plays for his national team this week, you get a partial wages refund, which is deducted from this figure.

*Additional staff: Your staff cost 1 500 € per person per week.

*Arena costs: The running and servicing of your arena. Note that this is a sum you pay every week regardless of whether you're at home or away.

*Investments in your youth squad: None, small, medium or large

*Interest costs: Only if you've run up debts.

*Temporary costs: Besides the purchasing of players, changing coaches, firing specialists, moving up youth squad players etc. costs money. All the week's one-off costs are accumulated here.

End Of Season Income
At the end of every season the league authorities hand out a bonus if their club has done well enough. Money is handed out to first, second, third, and fourth place. How much depends on your place and how high up you are in the league system:

+End of season bonus

There is also a 10 000 € bonus paid for having the top scorer in a series. The money is paid out after the last match of the season. If two players tie for this award, both current owners of the players will receive the award; however, if two of your own players tie, then you only receive one prize.

The budget and all matters concerning economy can be found at - yes, you guessed it! - the "Economy" caption on "Your Club" menu.

Promotion bonus
The teams also agreed that a special bonus should be given to those who manage to promote their team to a higher level. If your team is automatically promoted from Level 6 or above, you get a higher bonus than teams that reach the higher division after playing a qualifying game. In leagues Level 7 and below, both the first and second team of each series are automatically promoted, and there are no qualifying matches. So, in those divisions, the winner gets the higher bonus, while the runner-up gets a little less. If your team loses a qualifying game and stays in the lower division, no bonus at all is paid out. All promoted teams will also get a 10% supporter bonus (similarly, relegated teams will lose 10% of their supporters).

Here is an example of how the bonus system may look:

Club A wins its Division IV and is promoted without qualification to Division III. They will get 240 000 € in prize money for winning its Division IV and 170 000 € in bonus money for being promoted without qualification. Total: 410 000 €.
Summary
Following is the list of most popular ideas that have been suggested by Hattrick managers to the HT-team, but for various reasons have been deemed impossible or unlikely to be implemented.

One important purpose of this page is to keep managers from starting 'let's implement this' type of threads in the Global conference every time a new manager has the same bright idea that someone else submitted a week ago. This would also save HT-team the trouble of explaining the same things over and over again.

Please start a separate section for each idea and put up an explanation why it wouldn't be implemented. Quote the original if possible.

Champions League
Throughout most of Hattrick's history there have been numerous proposals requesting the developers to create a Champions League, however to this point they have all been rejected for various reasons. There are some serious obstacles which need to be overcome before a Champions League could be implemented. Several of these obstacles depend on the format and would include the possibility of a third game during the week, additional training for higher level teams and timing considerations. Several opponents of a Champions League have also expressed concern that the financial rewards involved in a Champions League would bias the game towards the uppermost level teams. Because of these and other concerns, the Hattrick Team have declared that they have no intention of implementing a Champions League in the game for the forseeable future.

A Hattrick user Calvert, a lower level manager in the United States, decided to run a simulated Champions League based on a proposal he had submitted in October 2004. His simulation however doesn't involve playing any 'real' matches and thus cannot use the Hattrick match engine.

More than 8 teams per series
There have been a lot of discussion on how to change the sizes of the divisions (e.g. the number of leagues per level). This due to the fact that is takes a lot of time to have to start in one of the lowest divisions, say tenth or eleventh, and advance upwards. It would be easier to advance quicker for really cunning new managers to start in a broader division. But on the other hand, that would imply a lot of changes to the league system of today. Also, having larger division means more competition for advancement and less time for the best managers to build up their teams in optimal conditions, i.e. with little competition. All in all, the benefits of such a change are outweighed by the drawbacks.
