Importance of training
Training is ones of the most important aspects of a successful team in Hattrick. By concentrating on training just one skill for a number of seasons a team can take medium skilled, young players and train them up to become superstars, who can then be sold for a handsome profit. Thus improving your team and helping you in your quest to win promotion.

Training types
In Hattrick, training takes place once a week. Typically only players who played on certain positions are fully trained depending on the skill you are training. If, for instance, forwards are being trained then only the players that played as a forward in one of the two games that week receive training. Note that only last played position matters for training.
There are 12 types of training. Each have their own potential for generating profit or improving your team. Generally the training types that concentrate on one of the main skills (goalkeeping, defending, playmaking, winger, scoring) are the most popular training types.
<TD></TD></TR>

</TABLE>

Please note the 'Training Speed' numbers are based on 17 year old trainees, using a solid coach, and 9 assistants.

Training efficiency factors
Effect of coach
To achieve the optimal training time you need a coach with solid coaching skills.
A coaching level below that lengthens training time. A general rule of thumb is one extra week for every level below solid.
excellent coaches train slightly faster (roughly half a week) than solid ones but are generally seen as too expensive to be profitable in the long term.

Effect of player age
Young players train much faster than old players. To achieve the optimal training time your trainees need to be between 17-18.
Players older than that will generally train slower. Again the rule of thumb is one extra week for every year older than 18. More precisely, training is 8-9% slower with each additional year.

Effect of assistants
Assistant coaches also help with training. You may only have 10 of any one type of employees. However assitant coaches and goalkeeping coaches are treated as one type, so a team may only have a combined total of 10 coaches. Typically non-goalkeeping training teams employ 9 assistant coaches and 1 goalkeeping coach. It is believed that a goalkeeping coach helps with keepers' form. Some hire more goalkeeping coaches and others argue that it is possible to have 10 assitant coaches and 1 goalkeeping coach with no adverse effects on the team, but some users have reported training losses after trying this.

If you are short of money or a newbie with limited budget, there is no point in hiring all the possible assistants. The effect of additional ones decreases fast. E.g. having 5 GK coaches instead of 10 will slow GK training all the way from solid to divine by 1 week only.

Training intensity
Most team managers agree it is best to train at 100% intensity. It is believed that is brings beneficial effects to the form of the team, when training at the fastest pace possible. It is also believed that the chance of injuries raises with the training intensity.

When to cash in
In most cases selling your trainees at age 21 is the best way to maximise profit. Once a player hits 21 years old, he begins to train at a noticably slower rate compared to a younger player.

With particularly high skilled players, especially National Team players, training can be taken on further, but in general the financial returns decrease beyond the age of 21.

It is also worth noting it is possible to overtrain a player, and make him unsustainable in the long run due to wage restrictions.

Choosing trainees
Choosing the correct players to train is a balancing act. There are four factors to consider.
* Training skill
* Age
* Secondary skills
* Price

There is little to be gained from training players that are not at least passable in their training skill.
Training a player who is passable or solid in primary skill is not as profitable as training higher skills.
But players of these lower skills cost considerably less to purchase.
To get some ideas of the cost and profit from various skill increases see
HAM Transfer Price Evaluation

17 year olds with high skills are expensive. On the other hand, older players train slower.

The better the secondary skills, the more you will pay to purchase the trainee, but the final selling price will also be higher.

----

Do alot of people not train till 21, might be worth mentioning that for balance.
The bit on form about goalkeeping was there, just not very clear really.
So I've tidyed it up so hopefully it is clear now that general trains goalkeeping and also that shooting trains set pieces

----

I feel personally that 21 is getting on a bit, so I put 20, but that said if the general consensus is 21 it can be changed
----
As team gets stronger, it becomes important to find the balance between trainable and playable players, therefore I'd say, that 21 y.o. are not too old for training.
----
With through passes, you can train 20 people, not 18. You could play twice 5-5-0.

you can indeed train 20 as you can with defensive position
however since you can't gain formation experience I did not count them.

In reality each training type could well have a page to itself detailing all the ins and outs
profit potential/formations to use/ways to balance winning games and using that type of training

Since training is so vital to hattrick it is no harm to strive to create a real definitive guide to all the options

Match rating
After each match you will be able to see both teams' match ratings on the right side of the full commentary text. It may look something like this:

EXAMPLE TEAMNAME F.C.

Player rating and team formation (link to 'evil' stars)

Team Attitude: Normal

Tactic: Attack in the Middle

Tactic skill: solid

Midfield: weak (high)

Right Defence: passable (very low)

Central Defence: inadequate (low)

Left Defence: weak (high)

Right Attack: weak (low)

Central Attack: solid (very low)

Left Attack: wretched (very high)

----
This gives you an indication of how strong or weak any of the 7 areas of your team play were in the match. If your midfield was stronger (e.g passable compared to his weak)than your opponent's then you will have had more possession of the ball in the game and thus more chances to score (this is complicated slightly if he played counter-attacks LINK).

The defensive and attacking ratings can be compared according to logic, so his left attack strength was pitted against my right defensive strength and so on.

Do not think that defense and attack ratings are like for like. It is generally considered that you would need an attack rating around twice or just below twice the quoted strength of his opposing defense rating if you hope to make break-throughs in that particular area of the field. For example: If his central defense is around "weak" I may need a central attacking rating of more than "passable" to be fairly confident of a break-through there. Nothing is certain, though, because of our old friend Random.
Overall rating
Hattrick by default doesn't provide a way to easily express overall strength of a team, in order to compare two teams or assess the progress of a team. The most primitive measure would be a total number of stars players gained after playing a match. However, due to several reasons, this number showed rather inefficient and deceiving.

For that purpose, HatTrick users looked for other ways to express overall team rating. The most popular seem to be HatStat. Other include LoddarStats, VnukStats etc.

Tactics and Training
Certain training routines work well with tactics.

Tactics for Scoring Trainers
As a scoring trainer, you'll find that your tactics are rather limited, as you need to stregthen your midfield while playing 3 forwards. The most common formation using 3 forwards is the 3-4-3 with 3 IMs and a winger (which is usually a WTM). The most common variations of the 3-4-3 are:

[ ---------GK--------------- ] ~#~#~#~#~# [ ---------GK----- ]

[ D.WB--CD--IM-D.WB ~#~#~#~#~# [ E.F--CD--CD-E.IM ]

[ E.Fo-IMO-IMD-WTM ] ~#~#~#~#~# [ E.CD--IMO-IMO-WTM ]

[ -----FO--FO------------- ] ~#~#~#~#~# [ ------FO--FO------- ]

The first formation gives you decent wing defence, which is useful against winger trainers, people playing forwards towards wing or anybody that has a decent wing attack (unless you're trying to guess the side you'll opponent will play his wing). It's the usual "all round" formation.
The second formation works well against most teams who concentrate on centre attack (other scoring trainers, notably), but it leaves you relatively weak in wing defense.
If the use of tactics like AIM and AOW is worth its drawbacks it's still open for discussion.

General tips
Before each game examine your oppostion, and if it's got strong midfield, but weak attack, consider playing with an OCD or with CA (if you have the proper defenders, of course; CA can be especially lethal with the 4-3-3 and 5-3-2 formations). If its attack is strong, play your inner mids defensive, and if its defence is strong, play your inner mids offensive.
Generally speaking, try to find the opponent's weak spot and hit there. If the opponent has no wing defence, use a FTW or an offensive winger. If you're simply superior to your opponent in something and he can do nothing about it, insist on it and think what your opponent might do to counter your advantage. For example, if you have a better midfield than your opponent, consider that he might play counterattack, so strengthen either your back-line or your attack.

Jablan: Formatting, links

Principle 1: Read and understand the rules! You cannot expect to be good at this game without a basic understanding of how it works. The rules are VERY GOOD and should be read more than once.

Principle 2: Put in place a strong training system (ie. train one Primary skill for at least 3-4 seasons, and train 17-19yo players). Trainees should be sold when they get older for profit, and replaced with new youngsters, as older players take longer to train.
This is how you will improve your team and make money. (NB. Always play a formation which maximises the number of players who receive training. (Ie, play 3 forwards when training Scoring)) Play different players in mid-week games than in your league games, and always play a mid-week game. This doubles your number of players being trained. Train at 100% intensity.

A passable trainer with poor leadership is a good choice as a startup coach.

Principle 3: Make a plan and stick to it. HT is a marathon, not a sprint. (Always, however, learn from the forums and tweak your plan where it needs it. Learn who is trustworthy for advice on the forums and who isn't. Microscope is.)

Principle 4: Manage your expenses. When you start out, less backroom staff is better than more. (1 goalie coach, 5 assistant coaches, 3 spokespersons & 1 Physio(maybe) is good to start(if you're training outfielders))

Only spend money on anything if (a) you can afford it, (b) if you really understand why it is necessary to do so and (c) if you can spare the cash. You DO get charged interest if you're in debt, 5% every week. Bankruptcy isn't forever, but it's annoying waiting for a new team for a few weeks!

Principle 5: When upgrading a position (usually after the sale of a trainee and after the trainee replacement has been purchased), replace a player with a player that is 2 skill levels higher.(No more, or less. Teams with a single 'star' player can be predictable, or the 'star' can have a bad run of form, and thus they're easier to beat)

Principle 6: Win midfield. Although balance is desirable, midfield is still King.

Principle 7: Manage your TS (Team Spirit). Why? because it affects your midfield lots. (In it's simplest form, this means PIC(Play it Cool) games you can't win OR can't lose(NB. Principle 10), and Normal or PIC everything else) NB owning a "clown" does not affect TS significantly. The leadership of your coach is far more important.

Principle 8: Play 'Normal' (Ie, no tactics like AIM, etc...). Only start using tactics if you know how they work and if they are necessary.(which mostly they are not)

Principle 9: Scout your opponents. Learn where they are weak and strong, and know your team. ("Know yourself and know your enemy, and you will never be beaten in a thousand battles." Sun Tzu)
Stars are not the best indicator of where a team is weak or strong. Look at match ratings for this. Stars can be deceiving/evil.

Principle 10: Understand that there is a huge random factor at play. Expect unexpected results...they are part of HT-life.
