Max A Team Defending Training

Petdr: add new variant to max a team training

Here is a training plan for a team playing 4-5-1 and 4-4-2 for league games and 5-4-1 for friendlies. The idea is to maximize the number of a-teamers who are receiving training.

4 defender trainees.

1 winger who plays in defence in friendlies and so is also a trainee to become a nice balanced wingback. 19-20yo and as much wing as you can afford.

4 IMers who also train defence in friendlies.

1 winger who is old and cheap.

2 forwards who are old and cheap.

This gives you the flexibility to play all permutations of 4-5-1 and 4-4-2 in competitive matches, with any amount of F, W, and WTM you like. It also keeps your outlay low as your non-defence players are also trainees during the friendlies, and means you don't have many players hanging around not training and not accumulating value (only 3 A teamer outfielders are non training). And you still have the full complement of 9 trainees!

Note this regime increases the chance of injuries to your IM players as they play twice each week, which is why they need to be young so they heal fast!

Variant B

I started with the plan above but modified it to use the following trainees

3 CD trainees
3 IM trainees
3 W trainees

plus the two forwards and one winger who are old and cheap.

As you sell your trainees which are playing CD you replace them with an IM trainee and buy a better IM player and add more defence on them.

Of your 3 W trainees two will be playing WB, as you sell them your other trainee moves to WB and you buy a better winger and add more defence on them.

So essentially your new trainees start in the midfield and are played twice a week and as you sell your defender trainees you move a middie into the back line and buy a better midfield trainee (more primary skill and more passing to improve your attack). This way your constantly improving your ratings across each sector.
These are the central players for your team, and probably the most important position as far as the matches are concerned.

The main skills used by these players are playmaking and stamina, passing and defending are also useful.

If they are played defensive, they need more defending and less passing.

If they are played offensive, they need more passing and less defending.

If they are played towards wing, they need more winger and less playmaking.

Specialities

Here is a ranking of specialities on mid-fielders.

Head is always good. This is probably the best for an IM.

Powerful isn't bad. They gain a bit of PM/Defending/Scoring in the rain and lose Scoring, which they don't care about, in the sun. The downside is they might get tired early in the sun.

Quick isn't bad. They don't care about the scoring penalty in rain, and most don't care about the defending penalty in the rain and sun either, plus they can stop opposing Quick Forward events.

(No specialty) is a decent middle ground without penalties. It's probably better than Technical, and is definitely better than an Unpredictable IM without good defending.

Technical is probably worse than no specialty due to the negative PM weather event.

Unpredictable is better than nothing with good passing+defending, and is probably the worst specialty without good defending.

Goal
The goal of this plan is for a new player to hattrick who wants to train defending, but minimize the initial outlay.

Initial GK training
Initially one starts by training goal keeping.
This is because buying 10 defending trainees is beyond the budget of a new player.

Buy two 17 yo trainees.
Trainee A has passable defending with as much set pieces as you can get.
This trainee will be your long term goal keeper.
Trainee B should have passable goal keeping.
This trainee will be sold.

Train goal keeping with 5 assistant coaches until Trainee B hits world class keeping.
This should be around 30 weeks later, or two seasons.

As you earn money start upgrading the rest of your team in the following order:
* 3 mid-fielders with solid PM
* 2 forwards with solid scoring
* 2 wingers with solid wing
* 3 defenders with solid defending

Don't spend too much on these players, they will soon be sold, but are just there so you start winning some games.
I recommend not starting a youth team until you've bought all of the above players,
the 20,000 EUR every week can buy a decent player every three weeks.
Once you have a decent squad and are winning then start your youth team.

Switch to defending training
At week 30 you sell your world class GK.
This will get you at least 3,250,000 EUR.

You then use this to buy the following trainees:
* 3 CD trainees (at least passable defending)
* 2 WB trainees (at least passable wing and inadequate defending)
* 4 IM trainees (at least solid playmaking with inadequate defending)

You now play 5-5-0, 5-4-1 and 5-3-2, with your 4 IM trainees and GK trainee being your defence for friendlies.

When you sell your CD trainees, buy better IM trainees and make you IM trainees become your CD trainees.
The goal is to keep improving your team, but minimize the disruption caused by selling trainees.

When you sell your WB trainees, just buy better WB trainees.

When you GK reaches a level of defending that you are happy with, you can then start playing 4-5-1 and 4-4-2.

4 defender trainees.
And you still have the full complement of 9 trainees!
* Managers must choose between training at maximum potential, or switching to a 'better' formation with fewer players at the back in league games
* Defence trainers often need to buy defenders with passing, enabling them to counter attack. These players will not recoup full value at the time of selling
* Training is the slowest of the main training types
* Lack of goals means supporters are reluctant to follow your club

Petdr: add rules of thumb

Counter attack tactic
Benefits
* Additional opportunities if you do not win the midfield.
* These chances are additional to the regular chances.

Drawbacks
* Counter attack (CA) ability is modified by the players form and experience and the result is a CA skill which appears to be completely linear.
* Requires good defence and attack ratings to work successfully.
* Passing on defenders may cost a lot of extra money, and is only used in connection with CA, AIM and AOW skills.

Counter attack opportunities
There are 2 kinds of counter attacks (CA): normal and random CAs. The random CA is a rare event.

Random CA
Unlike the normal CA, you do not need to play the CA tactic to get a random CA, and you can also get it when you win midfield. They are much less frequent than normal CAs, but if you have a relatively strong defense they do appear from time to time. They can of course also appear even if you play CA tactic, but there is no way yet of telling which kind you get.

How many random CAs can you get in a match? The highest known number so far is 4, which has occurred in 1 known match.

See also these quotes from HT-Jonas on Global.

Considerations
based on opinion

Which midfield rating?
Which midfield rating counts? Before calculating midfield penalties from CA and PIC or after? Nobody knows for sure, but statistical data indicate that the midfield needs to be weaker before calculating the penalties in order for normal CA to work.

What about MOTS and CA? Can you have a weaker midfield without MOTS and win midfield with MOTS and still have a working CA? The statistical data is very limited in this area as very few MOTS and CA at the same time. Until otherwise proved, it would be prudent to expect it not to work and that CA requires a team to lose midfield both before and after penalties and bonuses.

Number of CAs in a match
How many CA's can you get in a single match? As with so many other things this is a secret HT keeps to themselves. Before random CAs were implemented 3 CAs was the highest recorded number and that was a fairly frequent number. It was then believed that 3 was a maximum number. After random CAs were implemented a few matches with 4 CAs have been recorded. It seems likely that they are caused by the team getting both normal and random CAs, but there is so far no way of knowing for sure.

CA Federations
There is also a Counter-Attackers Federation. This federation contains over 200 members and was founded by Turbopippip in 2004. This is the federation to go to if you have any questions about CA.

Rules of Thumb
Rules of thumb from the oceania forum from an experienced CA manager

1) Do not lost possession by less than 40%

2) Defence at least two levels high than their attack (should give around an 80% chance of stopping an attack, although the higher the better obviously)

3) Attack equal to their defence (to give a better than 50% chance of converting)

4) A CA skill rating of the same level as the average primary skill within their team.

The top-ranked teams in each league automatically qualify for the cup. The number of teams accepted into the cup ranges from 128 to a maximum of 32,768. This means that there will always be low-ranked teams in all leagues that aren't allowed into the cup. For example, in a league with 680 teams, 512 will play in the cup. In a league with 10,920 teams, 8,192 will play in the cup. Matches are played mid-week, instead of friendlies. Check the league dates in your league for exact times (these can be found under Upcoming Activities on the main League page).

Cup Development
The first round always takes place the week before the first league game of the season. The first round opponents are announced one week before the games. Opponents for the next round are always determined immediately after the games.

The teams are ranked according to the league positions at the end of the previous season. This means that the ranking stays the same for the duration of the cup. The highest-ranked teams are always seeded to meet the lowest-ranked teams. The higher-ranked team always plays away. In the semi-finals and finals, the game is played at a neutral ground

Revenue
The home side gets two-thirds of the crowd revenue and the away side gets one-third. This applies to all cup matches except the semi-finals and final when the teams split the revenue 50/50. It's also true that the fans of a Division IV team will want to see a game against a higher division side, but that is not true the other way around. In general, the fans aren't very interested in the first couple of rounds of the cup, but as it goes on, attendance will increase. This means that a Division IV team going far in the cup can make a lot of money!

On top of this, there is also prize money up for grabs, although the big money is made through attendance.

Draws
All cup games not settled during normal time go to extra time, and if that doesn't settle the game, there's a penalty shoot-out. During extra time, stamina becomes more important than it was during the second half of normal time and teams lacking experience become even more likely to succumb to nervousness.

If this doesn't end things, then you have to face a nerve wrecking penalty shoot-out at the end of the game. At every penalty (not during regular match time, though) a test of the players experience is carried out. At this point, don't send forth your shaky 17-year old debutante as the first penalty taker! The skills taken into consideration include scoring ability, set pieces ability, as well as the technical specialty for penalty-takers, and the goalkeeping skill for keepers.

Cards
Cup Matches are Competitive matches, this means that cards received during a cup match are valid in the League, too.
A player who received a red card during a Cup Match, will miss the following league game.

Cup Matches
You'll find your cup matches under the "Leagues and Cups" link on the left hand side menu. From the Cup page you can check how many rounds have been played, and also see the games played for each round. The early rounds of a cup, however, are not displayed, because there are too many games played.

Teams playing the national cup
All leagues have a national cup. A maximum of 32768 teams can participate in the cup, depending on the size of your league.

{| border="1" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0" align="center" style="text-align:right"
Risk/Reward
Remember that your players may get injured during cup matches. As in real life, playing a whole season will take its toll on the squad. Sometimes it might be a better idea to save your best players and play it cool by fielding the reserves. However, the cup is a good opportunity to make yourself some extra money, especially for ambitious teams in Divisions IV and lower. The cup is also a good opportunity for you to let your players get some valuable match experience, earning about double as much experience as a league match.

The rewards for participating definitely outweigh the risks, and there's also the matter of the glory. Every year, the best Hattrick players (the winner of the highest league and the cup final winner) get their names engraved in the "Hall of Fame".
Introduction
Any game that is not a competitive match is a friendly. The main point of friendlies is to maximise training, or keeping your substitutes in a hopefuly better form. There is also some gate income will help your economy, but the income is quite low compared to an official league match (it is rare to spot friendlies with over 5.000 spectators, even among teams from the top divisions). A popular thing to do in friendly matches is flag chasing, where you visit a new country every week.

Effects
The outcome of the match has no effect on sponsors, supporters, team spirit or confidence. Suspensions do not apply in friendly games, and red/yellow cards do not carry over to league games. However, players might get injured while playing that match, and they can also gain a tiny amount of experience, much lower than the amount of experience from a league match. See the experience article for the formula.

Income
The amount of spectators who attend a friendly match is significantly lower than the amount of spectators who attend a regular league match. The income is split evenly among the two teams. The attendance will be slightly higher if the match is an international friendly.

Match types
The friendlies can be played using two different kind of rules:
Normal
* If the match ends in a draw, no extra time or penalties will be played.
* The amount of attendance is lower than a cup rules friendly.
Cup rules
* If the match ends in a draw, extra time and penalties (if needed) will be played.
* The attendance of the match is higher than a normal friendly.

Venue
International friendly
International friendlies cost 6000 US$ each. These types of friendlies can have some benefits, though. Many users choose to play matches abroad in order to collect flags (many of these players belong to the Flag Chasers Community). Your players will also gain about twice the experience they would usually receive in a National Friendly. International friendlies can also provide an opportunity to meet different types of players in different countries and cultures.

The times specified below indicates the earliest possible start time for international friendlies. There can be delays for various reasons, and all the updates, as well as matches, take time to complete. Precisely how long varies depending on how many teams there are in the league and on the type of update.
National friendly
A National Friendly is a match that is played mid-week with another team in your club's home country. It will earn your players about 1/10 the experience they would earn in a League Match and about 1/2 the experience they would earn in an International Friendly.

It costs nothing to play a friendly against a team in your home country. However, less spectators will watch your match than if you were playing an International Friendly. Spectator income is split evenly between the visiting and home clubs (as in International Friendlies).

Neutral ground
The term "Neutral Ground" refers to an arena where a match takes place, but which neither team playing the match owns. The owner of the "Neutral Ground" does not receive any monetary compensation for allowing the other two players to use his arena.

Note that matches played on "neutral ground" will not earn a flag for either of the participating teams, unless the match is held in one team's home country (in which case the away team will earn a flag).

Considerations
Profitability
For clubs of the lowest division in large leagues (e.g. Netherlands, Spain, Sweden or Germany) international friendlies (away) are not recommendable. The travelling costs will be higher then the spectator income of the match. Those teams should play friendly matches against higher division teams in their own country or international friendlies in their own stadiums. The economic effect is also important here.

example (german XI. division team):

spectators in series games:
2175
1230
2247
1243
1104

Spectators in a friendly against a IV. division team:
985
