Skills are a key aspect of Hattrick, determining how well the players play, and what wages you will have to pay them every week. They also determine the TSI of a player.

In Hattrick, skill levels are shown as the terms ranging from non-existent to divine. In many situations it is convenient to use numerical skill values instead of terms, and these numbers can be found here.

Skill levels on Hattrick are always rounded down. If you are interested in exact skill levels, check the subskills page.

Players may need different Skills depending on their position. There are primary, secondary and some are even talking of tertiary skills.

For example, a winger's main skill is wing; passing, playmaking and stamina are secondary skills. Defending would be considered a tertiary skill.

The Hattrick community often uses a-skill, b-skill and c-skill instead of primary, secondary and tertiary.

Skills
Stamina
Stamina is absolutely vital for any players who use playmaking. If a player does not have enough stamina, a serious drop in their playmaking contribution will be noticed, particularly during the second half of matches.

In addition to this main use, it is somewhat important for other players (see Special Event) and Pressing.

The maximum stamina a player can attain is formidable.

Playmaking
Together with stamina, Playmaking is the most important skill for inner midfielders and wingers played towards the middle. It is also used by wingers, defensive forwards and offensive central defenders. Offensive wingbacks use a tiny bit as well. As noted above, this skill is used in conjunction with stamina.

Wing
Wing skill refers to the ability to create scoring opportunities by advancing down the sides. This is obviously most useful for wingers (a-skill), although Wingbacks also are able to profit from it. A forward toward wing will also benefit a lot from this skill.

The most effective training type to improve the wing skill is crossing.

Scoring
The ball is supposed to go into the net, and scoring ability makes sure it gets there. It is the most important ability for forwards, but not particularly important for anyone else. Any player with good scoring skill combined with good set pieces skill may score on a long shot special event.

The most efficient training type to improve scoring is scoring training.

Goalkeeping
Goalkeeping is the ability that goalkeepers use (and they need it a lot!) . They use also defending skill as sub-skill.

Passing
The scorer gets the credit, but the player giving him the decisive pass is just as important. Both forwards and midfielders, including wingers, profit from being good at this. Passing is also very important for use with tactics. It helps to compute ratings for Counter Attack, Attack on Wings and Attack in the Middle.

The training types to train passing are short passes and through passes.

Defending
Defending skill controls a player's ability to stop opponent's attacks. Unconditionally the most important ability for all types of defenders. Midfielders and Goalkeepers may also put this ability to good use. It is also relevant on all players when using the Pressing tactic.

The most efficient training type to increase the defending skill is Defending training

Set Pieces
One player is appointed for Set Pieces. he'll rip the opponent to pieces.

Contribution
Different skills have different contributions towards different areas of match. Here are listed the skills that contribute to ratings according to the rules page in Hattrick.

A team is the virtual football team one owns and manages in Hattrick. It consists of a number of virtual football players, usually between 20 and 30 (maximum 50). The manager chooses a formation with 11 of these players (10 outfielders and 1 keeper) for each game, plus 5 substitutes (forward, midfielder, winger, defender and keeper substitutes).

If the 50-players limit is exceeded, training is lost for that week. Please take note that the coach is considered a player, as he may well play (and often does!)

Each player has an individual name and ID, along with its current age, and is made up of assorted skills, personality, form, experience and specialties. He'll also have an ideal position, but you'll need to work that out through experience!

Age
One of the attributes of a player, is the current age of the player. Since the beginning of season 33 (late july-07) player birthdays are individual, and one HT-year is 9999999999999999 days.
Before this was implemented, every player had their age updated every season on the Monday immediately before the first round of cup matches. So back then, every player in Hattrick had the same birthday.

Form
Form is one of the most important characteristics for any player, determining how well he is able to use his skills. You'll note that a good player who is out of form will often be outperformed by a not so good player at the top of his game.

Experience
Some players may not have the greatest abilities, but their knowledge of the game more than makes up for it. Thus, old and experienced players often play much better than their younger, greener colleagues.
Some of the players in Hattrick have specialties that differentiate them from other players. A player may have only one specialty, and no more.

Player's specialties are also affected by the weather, for example a Quick player will not play as well as he could in wet and rainy conditions.
Also players that have Head as their specialty will be better at scoring headers/clearing headers than another player that does not have the Head specialty.

Personality
Finally, a player also has four personality characteristics, leadership, agreeability, honesty and aggressiveness.

Injury and Suspension
All this is well and good, but sometimes a player isn't able to play...

For more information, see Injury.

Yellow and Red Cards
Players may get booked or sent off during games. Two bookings during a match will automatically lead to the player being sent off. Bookings and Sending-Offs during competitive games eventually lead to a suspensions. A player will be suspended for the next (competitive, cup or league) match if he is sent off, or if he has accumulated 3 bookings during a season. This is shown by a red card symbol on the player page. You can also see how many yellow cards have been received so far. At the end of the season all cards are cleared.

Whilst a player can receive cards during friendly matches, they have no other effects than those seen during the game.

Highly aggressive players will tend to be booked more often than other players. Especially if they're also dishonest or lacking in experience.

Players who are sent off still receive credit for appearing in the match for training purposes; if a player is sent off in a league match, it is not necessary to also play him in the midweek match.

Retirement
Players do not voluntarily retire from Hattrick. They always assume that they can continue to play and be useful to the club! When a player's skills have declined so much so that he is of no further use to the club and he is of no value as a transfer (or when a player suffers a career-ending injury), he may be fired or retired to the club's Hall of Fame. A fired player is not remembered by name — if you attempt to visit his page, you will find only an impersonal note about where the player was last seen. Occasionally, a fired player will be recycled as an externally-recruited coach.

Training Notes
The porpuse of this section is to catalog training notes by type. There are basically seven types of training notes:

* Completed training notes
* Aniversary notes
* Skill pop-up notes
* Talent Seach notes
* Behaviour notes
* Training problem notes
* Unusually good game notes
* Idiotic performance game notes

Completed training notes
A completed training note means that a player has reached his potential and will not see any more skill advances as part of the youth squad. You should strongly consider promoting the player to the senior squad.

Examples:
* player_name is working hard in the practice sessions, but he just doesn't seem to get much out of it. You need to decide if he should join the senior squad, or maybe tell him to start thinking about another career than football…
* player_name is just a piece of crap, fire hime right now

Aniversary notes
A aniversary note means that the player have his birthday in the week of training:

Examples:
* player_name had his birthday this week, and his mother came over with a really tasty birthday cake for the clubhouse. What a nice gesture.
* player_name wanted me to ask you if he could have a senior team contract for his birthday. I'm not sure if he was being serious or whether he was trying to make me look silly.
* On a sidenote, it was player_name's birthday this week. Time sure flies.
* It was player_name's birthday this week! The boys had a party, I made sure there was no alcohol involved of course.
* player_name was in a great mood this week, I heard he had his birthday recently.
* player_name had his birthday this week. Remember we can't keep the kids on the squad once they've turned 19 years old.

Skill pop-up notes
You receive a skill pop-up note from a player that pop a single skill. For instance, if a player pops from weak to inadequate, a training note is received.

Examples:
* player_name is improving his Playmaking ability, I think the current training regime is worthwhile in his case.
* player_name is improving his Passing ability, I think the current training regime is worthwhile in his case.
* player_name is an ambitious young boy, and I'm happy to say it is paying off. Especially with his Playmaking ability, which has improved with training.
* This week I can report that several players have improved their capabilities through training. A special mention for player_name, who has worked well on his Passing skills.
* This week I noticed that player_name has improved his Defending ability.
* player_name keeps developing, his Defending ability is now better.
* player_name had a good week, his Set pieces has really improved lately.

Talent search notes
A talent search note is produced when you find a suitable training position for your player, or if the player's position is not adequate to his skills prospects.

Examples:
* I'm starting to realize that player_name is a diamond in the rough! Train him well and he will be your most valuable young player.
* Try to find the right spot on the team for player_name, there is a lot of football in that kid.
* Some good news about player_name, he is responding well to the Passing training sessions.
* player_name has responded well to the Playmaking sessions we have organized this week. It's good to know our work has had an effect.
* Don't change the Playmaking training for player_name, it sure seems to be paying off at the moment!
* I wouldn't say player_name is necessarily much of a player today, but in contrast to some of the other boys, he certainly has potential for improvement.
* Mark my words, it would be a good thing to give player_name some Set pieces training before it's too late.
* player_name is undeveloped, but it could be worth giving him special attention in the training sessions.

Behaviour notes
A Behaviour note normally is about a specific problem or player caracteristic. A very nervous or calm player can produce a Behaviour notes. Sometimes, specialties can be revealed by Behaviour notes.

Examples:
* player_name has a very long fuse, never really gets in a fight.
* player_name has a very rough attitude, both on and off the pitch. That could get him into trouble.
* You never see player_name taking a dive on the field. You've got to respect the kid for that.

Training problem notes
A training problem notes normally means that a player cannot receive your actual training, or another training is more suitable.

Examples:
* When I see player_name on the practice ground, I can't shake the feeling that he really wants to train Keeper instead.
* The current training is not the optimal one for player_name, what he really needs is to practice Keeper.
* It's always OK for a player to hone multiple skills, but in the case of player_name it's obvious that a focus on Keeper sessions would be very productive.
* Feel free to let your boys try different positions, but I really think you should try giving player_name some Keeper training, too.

Unusually good game notes
A unusually good game note is produced every time a player performance on a specific game is better for no specific reasons:

Examples:

* I'm sure you noticed that player_name had an unusually good game this week. Let's hope he can learn how to play more consistently at that level.
* I hated the way player_name gave crap effort in our last game. I hope to never see him ever like that again anytime soon.
* Did you see player_name in this week's game? He did really well, given his capacity.
* player_name had a charmed game this week, I haven't seen him play that well before.
* player_name had a great game this week, don't forget to mention that to him.
* I hope you saw player_name play this week, he did one of his best performances in the team so far.
* In this week's game, player_name played close to his potential. Very well done!
Examples:
* I liked the way player_name gave his everything in our last game. I hope to see him like that again sometime soon.
