|I : II : III : IV : V|
The second California Friendly Cup saw a dramatic increase in the number of participants. CFC II drew almost three times as many participants as the inaugural event. By now commonly acknowledged as one of Hattrick's premier cup events, the CFC continued to be marked by a nearly perfect record of participation -- only a single side having been defaulted during the first two competitions. Cup founder fuegodiego, with mounting RL pressures, added Illuminati FC manager mbodey as Cup co-coordinator.
The CFC continued to have a strong international flavor with the well known Brazilian side Alpha F.C besting local favorites LA Lazers in the final. A third place finish was secured by Gothic Wombats, a team from the obscure and mysterious country of Oceania, by beating locals Illuminati FC.
CFC I Champion 1896 Lyn (En Pryd For By'n) represented the CFC in the US Champions League Cup. Solidifying the CFCs growing reputation, 1896 Manager tbane5 guided the side to the final where they lost a bitterly contested battle. mbodey, as the CFC I runner-up was also invited to participate in the USCL but declined the invitation.
While CFC I was primarily noted for it's heated rivalries, savage tackling, and connotations of class warfare, CFC II was marred by several controversies that erupted off the pitch. The most serious event was the now infamous Thanksgiving Day Incident.
The controversy erupted on the American holiday after a close finish in Group A. A tie for second place in the group required the application of the fifth tiebreak rule to determine which team would advance to the playoff round. CFC co-coordinator mbodey determined that, by rule, Illuminati FC was the second team to advance. The ruling, in conjunction with the fact that the CFC official making the ruling was also the manager of the advancing team, set of a firestorm of protest. While the ruling was upheld after review, and the integrity of the official involved was validated, the incident did spur a reassessment of the tie break rules. A secondary result of the incident was that the term "mbodey" (link to Urban Dictionary entry for "mbodey") has now entered the popular lexicon as a reference to situations related to suspicious results involving officials with a vested interest in those same results.
A second, notable incident occurred just prior to the CFC Final. Final participant (and eventual Champion), Rapha (A.K.A Mac Daddy Rapha) was rumored to be attempting to influence the officiating of the Cup Final. Mac Daddy Rapha was reputed to have sent two young women to the Southern California city of San Diego and offered to "introduce them" to CFC officials. While no official charges were ever lodged, an air of suspicion continued to cling to Mac Daddy Rapha. The rumors intensified after Mac Daddy Rapha's side won the final, with two controversial free kicks making the difference. CFC officials were in San Diego on personal business and unavailable for comment.
