Players in Hattrick can receive cards when they make fouls, just like in real-life football.

The chances of a player receiving a card are determined by his personality, namely his honesty and aggressiveness.

Rules

Red card or Yellow cardRed card or Yellow cardYellow cardRed card 90' when a player receives one red card (or two yellows) during a competitive match, he is sent away and he can not be fielded in the following official match (cup or league).
Booked+Booked+Booked: when a player collects 3 yellow cards in several competition or cup matches he can not be fielded in the following official match (cup or league).
In a national team game the cards received have no effect outside the national team.
In transfer list the cards count and bans continue after a transfer, it doesn't matter for which team he was playing.
In a friendly game this cards just have consequences for that match itself and are not important for the following matches.
At the end of the season the card status is reset and bans are cancelled.

A goalkeeper has never got a red card.
