Grugnolese (pronounced {ɡruɲɲoleze}) is an italian Hattrick club based in Lombardy, Italy. Founded by SigurRos-HGT on April 11, 2009 (season 38 in Italy and according to the global season count), Grugnolese won its first trophy in season 40 (XI division in Italy). Since its formation, the club has won 18 domestic trophies, including 17 leagues from XI to IV division in Italy - at least 1 of each - and 1 Coppa del Nonno (3rd level of Italian Cups - aka Consolation Cup) in season 80 and reached the 9th round (out of 14) of the Coppa Italia (the main italian cup) in season 76.

Grugnolese's home games are played at the Stadio Villa Giardino, with a current capacity of 68,900.

The youth team is called Grugnolese U19.

History

Origin of the name

The team is named after the street where the manager lived at the time of its foundation (Rosina Ferrario Grugnola was the first italian female aviator).
Here comes one of the team's nickname, gli aviatori (the aviators).

Early years (seasons 38-48)

The club started in season 38 in the XI.148 series, playing the last three matches of that season without being managed. The very first match occurred on the 12th round that season, with a 0-4 lost to BaruccanaStyle27 on 18th April 2009.
The first winning match occurred two weeks later, on the 14th round against the team Fidelis Campania: the final result was 2-1. Twelve minutes after the kick off Antonio Stefanelli scored the first goal for the club. The club finished in seventh position.

The following season the club began to be managed after the 1st round. The initial incoming transfers strengthened the team, which began to get good results, ending the season in third position. The unfortunate match of the eighth round against the direct rival for second place (and promotion), pimpateam, was crucial [1]. Pimpateam achieved 28 points, Grugnolese 27[2]. The season ended without promotion, nor relegation.

Season 40 started a little climb. Grugnolese won XI.148, X.1902 and IX.1121 series in a row, with the top scorer in all three seasons with Roberto Cipollone scoring 13 goals in season 40 and Floriano Nocera scoring 15 goals in season 41 and 11 in season 42.
These results led the club to the record of 37 wins in a row (from 12/39 to 6/42) and 40 matches in a row without defeats (9/39 to 6/42).

Afterwards, two seasons in VIII division followed (on season 44 Floriano Nocera top scorer with 15 goals), with a third and a first position, and three seasons in VII division, with the latter one ending with a promotion to VI division of italian series system - and the top scorer again (Yip van Caspel with 10 goals). On season 43, as the club faced its first VIII division series, the club played its first Coppa Italia match against Folgore Partenopea, with an ending result of 0-2 ([3]).

Season 48 represented the first humble peak of the club, with the first place in VI.412 series at the first experience at VI division. The club however failed to gain promotion losing the qualifier match 5-0 against Real Noce [4].

The HGT era (ss. 47-in progress)

After these quite anonymous seasons, during season 48 the club started the Home Grown Team (HGT) project, following this editorial dated 3rd October 2011. The stated aim was to reach III division with a sustainable project.

The team reached the aim at first attempt (seasons 62-63), while with the II Generation of players got better results, even if it stopped at III division as well (seasons 77-79).

The project has allowed the team to reach a 505 HatStats record during season 78 (1st in Italy and 8th in the world)[5] [6], while during season 80 the team won the Coppa del Nonno (3rd level of National Cups)[7].

On season 81 started the III Generation of the project, which is in progress.

First HGT Generation (2011-2016, ss. 47-61)

By the end of 2011 the club began to search for new players suitable to the purpose. The first player deployed was Francesco Gottardi on 6th March 2012 (3/48) for a friendly match. The team obviously weakened and dropped to VII division until season 53, when a new league victory led to a stable return to the VI division.
On season 55 a second VI division victory led to the first historical promotion to V division for Grugnolese since its foundation.

It took five seasons to Grugnolese to win one of the strongest V division series at that moment in Italy, after a two-season battle against the team Pikke. In season 59 after 13 rounds the classification said: Grugnolese 32 points, Pikke 30 points. Grugnolese then had a very unlucky match against Real Valsugana, which led the two teams paired at 33 points [8]. Pikke gained the first position due to a better goal difference.
The following season Grugnolese dominated its series with 34 points (Pikke just got 28 points) and got its first promotion to IV division [9].

On season 61 the club had an easy life, achieving 35 points and the first historical promotion to III division. However, the manager realized all the mistakes he made for this first previously unknown project. So he decided to begin a II Generation of HGT, giving up competing in III division.

This I Generation ended up with a record of 446 HatStats in a single match, obtained in season 60 (437 HatStats (on season 62) when former non-♥ goalkeeper De Benetti was replaced by a ♥GK, to get a full-HGT) and a record of 398 HatStats on average out of a whole season championship rounds, obtained in season 59.

Francesco Gottardi collected 328 appearances, while Mattia Sesto scored 88 goals despite his role as a wing-back.

Second HGT Generation (2016-2022, ss. 62-81)

As said, the team started a II HGT Generation on season 62, while approaching III division. The first player deployed was Roberto Urbinelli in a friendly match. Stamina at 5% and the new young goalkeeper caused a huge performance decrease, with the team ending in 6th position on season 62 and seventh on season 63, both seasons just above BOT teams. In this period, training was the principal thought of the club, so many other pale seasons followed, until season 72, when the new climb begun with the 1st place in VII division. The following season, in VI division, was very unlucky, and the team collected just 1 point in the first four matches. Therefore the team had to give up to fight for promotion, trying to reach a comfortable fourth place.

This little stop led the team being out of scale for the division it was in. The club won VI, V and IV division in a row, and finally made its way in the Coppa Italia, reaching 7th round on season 75 and 9th round on 76 season. Thus on seasons 77 the club reached the III division for the second time.

The team was quite competitive, but not enough to reach 1st place. It got a 4th place on season 77 and a 5th on seasons 78 and 79, ending up both season in a play-off match: the first one Grugnolese won 3-2 against Puzzina, the second one lost 0-2 against BABBABIA and this lead to a relegation in IV division.

At that point the manager focused on winning a trophy beyond division cups. The choice fell on the Consolation Cup, that in Italy has the funny name of "Coppa del Nonno" (translated: Grandpa Cup, slang expression used to identify a trophy of little value). So on season 80 Grugnolese succeded in winning the Cup, in a crazy final against Ranza boys.

Third HGT Generation (2022-in progress, ss. 81-in progress)

On season 81, the III Generation of HGT started during the friendly match against millwalls, deploying the future GK Salvatore Soligon.

Colours, kit and badge

Grugnolese colours are yellow and black, from which comes the nickname i gialloneri (the yellow and blacks).
The other nickname, i nerobandati (the blackbanded), comes from the black band that characterizes both the kit and the badge.
These colours have always been used by the manager SigurRos-HGT for all his fanta-football teams since 1995.

Grugnolese Home Kit has a yellow shirt with a black band on it, running from top-right to bottom-left. Shorts and socks are black, with yellow details.
The Away Kit has instead a white shirt with a black band as well, but with yellow border. Shorts and socks are yellow, with black details.

Badge

There are two official badges, the original one and the non-supporter one on the Hattrick site.
They both are an heater-shaped shield of gold with a black band.
The original one has a black chief too, with an inscription of gold reporting the name of the team and the italian tricolour. The year of foundation is placed at the bottom.

Fan Club

Typical Grugnolese fun mood after a big victory

The main and most known team's fan club is called Ingrugniti (vaguely translated: grumpy. Grugno in italian means an angry and intolerant facial expression; so ingrugniti are those who have this facial expression).
Despite their appearence, they are peaceful and apolitical. They just support the team with their renowned chants coming from the Curva Rosina Ferrario (Rosina Ferrario Stand).
There are other smaller ultras groups, called Gli Aviatori a terra (The Aviators on the ground), i Grugno-lesi (The Grugno-damaged) e I Banditi Bandati (The Banded Bandits).

Stadio Villa Giardino (2021-)

The team's stadium is Stadio Villa Giardino, after the name of the condominium where the manager lived in. It is home of Grugnolese since its foundation in 2009 and after numerous extensions it has now a 68,900 capacity. The last improvement of 16/01/2021 lead to the current capacity:

The first match ever played at Stadio Villa Giardino was on Saturday 18th of April 2009: at that time the capacity was 12,000, although only 1,665 spectators attended the match. The first time the stadium recorded a sold out after the last improvement was on 14th of August 2021 in the play-out match for relegation in IV division.
