Goalkeeper is one of most important players of a team. Goalkeeper has a very big influence in the defence ratings.
Primary skill they use is Goalkeeping and secoundary skill is defending, although experience is also important.
Some teams choose to use their goalkeeper as a Set Pieces taker. There is no penalty for doing this, but it will be disallowed as an option starting from season 37 (October 2008).
