Golden Maroons Football Club was formed in 2003 as Rayo Laguna by wealthy immigrants from Laguna who left their hometown for Cebu.[12] The team initially played games against other amateur clubs in amateur cups, but on 01 February 2006, the club turned professional and joined the newly formed Philippine Football Federation League, and subsequently competed their first recorded and first professional match; wearing the colours of the owner's hometown – blue and white – they were defeated 3-1 by Mindoro FC. | |||
The club continued their stay in Fourth Division for 12 straight seasons, and by December of 2009, club supporters were very disgruntled, which prompted several wealthy supporters, including Mr. Tyrll Adolf Itong, to take over the club's management. The new management invested heavily in the club, providing state-of-art equipment, world-class staff. New players were also bought to strengthen the club.
