FC Corto M. (18588) is a Danish club managed by AurelioZen since 19th of October 2002.
Team name
In the beginning of the 19th century an adventurous sailor stepped ashore in the city known as La Serenissime, but to most people it's called Venezia or Venice. This sailors first name was Corto and he was from the island of Malta. The name of the stadium is Maltese Park. The stories of Corto Maltese are well documented even though he has travelled all over the world. Among his friends is an infamous scoundrel - Rasputin - a man that has followed Corto Maltese all around the World. And The Clubs fan club is called Rasputin's Men. Among this mysteriously sailor's other friends is Pandora and her brother Cain Groovesnore. Ms. Pandora is rumored to once have had a love affair with Corto. Her brother Mr. Cain Groovesnore is said to have consulted Corto on several occasions in France during the Great War in the beginning of the 19th century. The only certain fact is that Ms. Pandora and Mr. Cain Groovesnore is fan club member 1000 and 1001.
The Club is managed by AurelioZen which clearly is a synonym. It has not been established who the person behind the name is in real life. There is a famous Venetian detective by the name Aurelio Zen, but if there is any connection between him, the manager of The Club or the owner of The Club is not clear. The only certain thing is that it seems that Venice is the common ground between the owner of The Club, the manager and the name - FC Corto M.
Therefore it seems like The Club is named after this famous sailor. It becomes more evident in The Clubs logo which bears a resemblance with the few pictures preserved of Corto Maltese.
The ancient history
The story of this club is shrouded in legend and myth.
The Club first appeared in the mid 1970s in some strange tournament which took place in some remote part of Northern Jutland. The tournament consisted of four divisions with six teams in each division. There are no records of any players, clubs or results. The legend tells us that the matches were played regularly for about a couple of years. The matches were decided with a roll of two dice.
But that was not just that.
There was some kind of odds connected to determine what the results should be. It was not just some random factor. It was very complicated. The tournament disappeared some years later and the great name of FC Corto M. vanished for a time. But it was not forgotten.
The recent history
The owner of The Club bought the remains of the club Freja from vesterholm on the 19th of october 2002 and made AurelioZen The Clubs manager. This time The Club had its base in Copenhagen. It started in the then lowest Danish division in season 17. More precise in div. v.59. The next day it played its first recorded match in recent time. It was in the middle of season 17 and luckily there were no relegation that season because The Club ended after another six matches on a 7th place.
For the next 5 seasons The Club established itself as a force in this 5th division (v.59) always ending in the top 3. In season 22 The Club finally ended as division v.59-champions with such a strong finish that it secured a direct promotion to division 4.
From the beginning in division 4 (iv.37) is was clear that The Club was someone that the other teams had to take very seriously. In their first season The Club ended as number 3 and the same happened in their second season. Then finally in season 25 The Club became division iv.37-champions and were again promoted without a qualification match. After just three seasons in the 4th division.
The first two seasons in the 3rd division (iii.14) were used to establish The Club as a solid team with the potential to win the division at some time. But then some unexpected happened. In the 3rd last match in season 28 the instructions to the team were to play it cool. It backfired because suddenly nothing worked after that. It ended with a relegation qualification match that were lost as well.
In the new 4th division (iv.2) the goal for the season were quite clear - promotion at once to the 3rd division. But it didn't happened because The Club were severely hit by injuries among the key players. The result were a disappointing 3rd place. Luckily the long injury-list were gone when season 30 were over and it resulted again in a direct promotion back to the 3rd division.
This time The Club took all their matches seriously in this new 3rd division (iii.8) and after a second place in the first season it resulted in a direct promotion to the 2nd division in season 32.
Unfortunately the two extra seasons in (iv.2) meant that the key players were getting old and were not capable of putting an impact in this 2rd division (ii.1). The Club were lucky that is survived the relegation qualification-match in their first season in the 2rd division. The Club were not that lucky in their second season and it meant a direct relegation to the 3rd division in season 34.
It was clear from this point on that The Club needed to replace their old key players with some fresh new and young players. The manager got the go ahead from the owner to start the rebuilding of the team. Everybody in the inner circles of The Club knew that it wasn't going to be easy and that it would involve some relegations.
The first season during the rebuilding of the team in the 3rd division (iii.10) ended with a place as number 8 and last and meant relegation in season 35. It ended a bit better in the 4th division (iv.54) in season 36 with a place as number 7. But still a direct relegation.
The Club is presently playing in the 5th division (v.76).
The Cup
The first many seasons The Club didn't have any cup success were the best result were a lost cup match in round 7. It was not until season 30 that The Club started to make an impact in the Danish Cup tournament when it reach the 12th round. In season 31 The Club reached its finest moment when The Club lost to Tottenham Titans in the quarterfinals (round 13). The season after that were not as successfull but made a fine cup tournament all the same and reached round 10.
