Überwinger

An überwinger (also sometimes called a combo winger or possession winger) is a player with very high skills in both winger and playmaking, and also occasionally in passing and set pieces and rarely in defending. The purpose of such a player is to provide exceptional ability in both wing attack and midfield ratings at the same time. Because of the way the wage structure in the game works, such players often have comparatively low salaries while providing superior in-game performance in more than one part of the field than players who only have one good skill. An überwinger also provides additional tactical flexibility, as his skills make it possible to play him either offensive or towards middle, as circumstances dictate.

Überwingers are often much more difficult to create than single-skilled players because of the time considerations involved and because they always have to be trained at a much older age than their single-skilled counterparts. Also, because the players have to be trained in more than one skill, managers either have to change their own training regimens in order to properly train the player or seek out appropriately skilled players on the transfer market. This makes potential überwinger trainees rare and expensive.

With the ongoing change in emphasis by the HTs from a training-based economy to a sponsor and attendance based one, more teams are turning to überwingers as a way to maintain good performance on the pitch while at the same time controlling their payroll to a more manageable level.
