The pitch setting was introduced on 1 April 2011 as an April Fools' Joke. Then pitch settings were removed on 2 april 2011, however a few weeks later the cutting pattern was re-added as an esthetic feature (usually called pointless feature).

Hattrick announces
Celebrating April Fools' Day 01-04-2010
April Fools' Day or All Fools' Day is a day celebrated in many countries on April 1. The day is marked by the commission of hoaxes and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, rivals, and neighbours, or sending them on a fool's errand, the aim of which is to embarrass the gullible.

To celebrate this day, Hattrick is releasing another player speciality: Fool. The benefit of such a player is that he will boost your team spirit - but only when this player plays at least 45 minutes in any competitive match. However, if he's not playing competively during the week, it might harm your team spirit.

You could set different kind of pitch settings, such as grass lenght or cutting pattern.
These would affect the matches played in the stadium in pretty odd ways...
