Each club will play a 16 week league (also called 'series') program of which the last 2 are 'Off-season' in which no league games are played but in which a number of things occur, including end of season promotion/relegation play-off games, mood resetting, writing-off of yellow cards etc.

The majority of clubs in each nation are eligible to play in that nation's cup competition which runs parallel to the league. Cup games start the mid-week before the first league game and continue in knock-out style until the final at around week 14. Teams winning a cup match are then allocated a cup opponent for the next round by a calculation which pits the best remaining teams against the weakest (roughly) in order of strength.

As manager of a Hattrick club, you have many responsibilities other than merely playing matches. You will need to control the economy of your team (or even teams if you create a professional youth team), and are responsible for organising a long term strategy based around training.

A long-term game

Don't expect instant results in Hattrick.

You do not receive enough money initially to be able to afford to win immediately, so you should plan for the long term.

The following contents are based on the opinion of Hattrick users — which means that their veracity and accuracy have not been confirmed by any official statement, and consequently they do not necessarily reflect the game reality. Please take this into consideration!

Establish a program based on a single training strategy and then use the money that remains to improve your squad. As your young players train, you will be able to sell them and use the proceeds to buy other players to improve your squad or even set-up a professional youth team to feed your main squad with young talent.
