Each club will play a 16 week league (also called 'series') program of which the last 2 are 'Off-season' in which no league games are played but in which a number of things occur, including end of season promotion/relegation play-off games, mood resetting, writing-off of yellow cards etc.

The majority of clubs in each nation are eligible to play in that nation's cup competition which runs parallel to the league. Cup games start the mid-week before the first league game and continue in knock-out style until the final at around week 14. Teams winning a cup match are then allocated a cup opponent for the next round by a calculation which pits the best remaining teams against the weakest (roughly) in order of strength.

At the start of a season, each team is listed in a position 1 to 8 in a league according to their previous season's successes. In week 1 the matches are 1 (at home)v 2 (away), 3 v 4, 5 v 6 and 7 v 8. The whole schedule looks like this:
