Hattrick:Naming conventions/Version 2

This page is a proposed as a new Hattrick Wiki policy. The proposal may still be in development, under discussion, or in the process of gathering consensus for adoption. References or links to this page should not describe it as "policy".

Making a new article in the Hattrick Wiki is a vital part of wiki editing. However, before you create an article, it's very important that you choose a correct title for your article. This policy will guide you through the basics of naming articles.

Conventions for all page titles

Every page title within the Hattrick Wiki (with the possible exception of pages created within the User namespace) should adhere to the following rules.

Capitalization

• In the title of any page, only the first word in the title should be capitalized. The exception for this is if there are proper nouns in the title. For instance, if you're creating a page about winger training trends in Barbados, the page title should read Winger training trends in Barbados (of course, you will likely want to view the notability policy before creating such an article). Only the first word (winger) and proper nouns (Barbados) are capitalized.
• If you are creating a page about a team, user, or other entity within Hattrick, the capitalization should appear in the same format as within Hattrick. For instance, an article on HT-Bjorn should appear as his name appears in Hattrick, HT-Bjorn. An article on his team should appear as Menlösa IF.
• The namespace of the article, if it is in a specific namespace (such as, in the case of this article, the Hattrick namespace), does not affect the capitalization of the article's title. Simply because Hattrick is capitalized in the title of this article does not mean Naming should not be capitalized. Naming is considered to be the first word in the title.

Pluralization

• All nouns should appear in singluar form. For instance, an article titled Midfielders is not valid; the article should be titled Midfielder.
• The exception is if the noun is an entity within hattrick that only appears as a plural noun and would not refer to the same thing if singular, such as "Supporters Club" or "Sponsors".
• Plural forms of nouns may redirect to the page for the singular form, so long as the plural form does not refer to something else entirely (e.g. "Supporters" redirecting to "Supporter").

Adjectives

• Adjectives should never be the only word in a title. Any adjective which has a corresponding noun article should redirect to the noun article. For instance, an article entitled "American" should redirect to USA.
• Once again, the exception for this is if the adjective is an entity within hattrick and the noun refers to something else entirely within Hattrick (example: Defensive and Defense).

Verbs

• Verbs should appear in gerund form. For example, an article about training should appear as Training, not Train or Trains, or Trainage for that matter.
• The exception is if the verb is a proper entity within hattrick. For instance, tactics such as Attack on Wings and Play Creatively should appear in their Hattrick names, not as "Attacking on Wings" or "Playing Creatively".

Language

• All article titles (and the content of articles, for that matter) should appear in English.
• If the verb is a proper entity within Hattrick, it should appear exactly as it does within Hattrick, so the title should not be translated. An english translation of the title may br a redirect page to the actual page. For instance, the article on Sweden should appear as Sverige, the country's name within Hattrick, not as Sweden. The Sweden page should redirect to Sverige.
• Non-english characters should only be used in the titles of proper entities within Hattrick as well.

Acronyms

• Generally, acronyms should not be used in page titles. The exception for this is if the acronym is widely known throughout the Hattrick community, and if the actual meaning of the acronym is widely unknown. For instance, RADAR is widely known, but Radio Detection and Ranging is not widely known. However, this is a very rare exception, and the vast majority of Hattrick-related acronyms do not follow this rule.
• The other exception is, again, if the article title is a proper entity within Hattrick, and this entity is abbreviated within Hattrick. For instance, the official Hattrick title for the United States is USA.

Articles

• The articles "a," "an," and "the" should not be included in page titles. For example, "A supporter" is not a valid title; Supporter is the valid title.
• If the article is an entity within Hattrick and in Hattrick is listed with a, an, or the, then it can be included in the title. Example: a page about a team named The Saints should be under the name of the team, The Saints.

Other Limitations

• Due to limitations in wiki code, it is impossible to include a piping character (|), A plus sign (+), curly braces ({}), or square braces ([]) in the title of an article. The wiki software also forces capitalization of the first letter of a title. If your article is about a proper entity which has a lower case first letter or contains one of the above characters, you will want to note the correct title of the article at the beginning of the article.

Common Usage

• If more than one name would fit all of the above rules, use the most commonly used name within the English-speaking community. If you are unsure of which usage is the most common, create the page under one of the titles and then immediately create a consensus debate on the corresponding talk page. For instance, both Defence and Defense are used commonly within the English language.
• The usage within hattrick always takes precedence over the common usage on this wiki, so if one of the options is used more frequently within Hattrick than the other options, use that option.
• Once you have chosen which name to use, create a redirect on any pages which refer to the same thing but are less common usages.
