The Set Pieces skill determines how good players are at taking "freekicks" (direct or indirect), "penalties" and corners; there is also the possibility of a long shot event related to set pieces. Around 15% of chances in a game come from these events (10% direct plus 5% indirect free kicks) so having a set pieces specialist in your team will greatly help you a lot to score one of them.

This skill is primarily trained through Set pieces training, but there is a small effect when training shooting.

Who uses it and how?

Most teams carry only one specialist, since to be a starter he must already have many other abilities and SP in General is a quite rare skill. You can decide a set piece shooter list (in case your usual shooter is replaced) using the penalty kicks shooter subpage. If your shooter is substituted, the second player on the penalty taker list will take care of free kick and penalties.

Goalkeeper will use set pieces as a part when trying to save a direct free kick or a penalty.

Set pieces skill contributes less than all other skills to a player's TSI.

Direct Set Pieces

About 2/3 of the Set Piece chances are direct free kicks (free kicks, and penalties). For this type of free kicks, the match engine considers only the shooter's SP and experience level.

SP is also important in penalties and penalty shoot-out after a 120 minute match. Here is the formula for player's efficiency for the shoot-out (coming from HO!):

Effectiveness = XP * 1.5 + CP * 0.7 + Scoring * 0.3

+ 10% if the player is Technical.

Indirect Set Pieces

About 1/3 of the Set Piece chances are indirect free kicks. For Indirect Set Kicks, the game engine considers SP level, experience, form and stamina.

While in direct set pieces the skill of the appointed shooter determines the chance of success, in indirect set pieces it is not a shooter/keeper matter, rather an additional team member is involved.

Here the outcome is determined by (in order of importance):

Attacking team
  1. Your outfield players average Scoring skill
  2. Your outfield players average Set Pieces skill,
  3. Your set pieces taker’s Set Pieces skill

Offensive effectiveness =
0.5 * SC + 0.3 * SP + 0.09 * Shooter's SP

Defending team
  1. Your outfielders average Defending
  2. Your outfielders average Set Pieces
  3. Your goalkeepers Goalkeeping
  4. Your goalkeepers Set Pieces.

Defensive effectiveness =
0.4 * DE + 0.3 * SP + 0.1 * keeper's SP + 0.08 * keeper's Goalkeeping

SC, DE, SP are the average value of the outfielded (or moving) players' skills of Scoring, Defending and Set Pieces respectively.

Hattrick announces
Indirect free kicks 16/06/2008
From now on, your set pieces taker will not just fire off the big gun whenever your team gets a set pieces opportunity. Once in a while he may try to find a team member instead – making it an indirect free kick! Indirect free kicks are now a reality in friendly games and from next season (October) in all games.

Overall, you will get a little bit more set pieces chances than today and about 1/3 of them will be indirect free kicks. Read this manual to find out how they work.

Related to this, your goalkeeper will use set pieces as a part when trying to save a direct free kick or a penalty. Keepers who lack set pieces skill will therefore not be as good as today when it comes to defending against set pieces. Moreover, your keeper can not be your ordinary set pieces taker anymore.
