Osmosis training was one of the names given to a skill trading type where a player could be trained even if they didn't play at all.
Today only a vestige of the past remains, after the restrictions imposed by the Hattrick Team that
[Set a] limit the excessive, almost industrial, use of skill trading where traders buy players before the training update and sell them right afterwards after they increased a skill – without ever played a match for their team.
Osmosis trader
Some managers, who are a type of skill traders, try to profit from this phenomenon by buying a lot of players with a very high sub-level. If done correctly the small amount of training will do to make a player pop within a couple of weeks. Then the player will be sold for a profit.
However, it takes considerable trader's expertise and time to spot players with a sufficient high sub-level and, in conclusion, making a real profit is very hard.
Also due to the frequent transfers and subsequent TS-drops, the team spirit would suffer from this guys.
Before November 2007, the osmosis training wotked differently. All players on a squad received training and this training was not limited to players that played in a match that week.
