Initially unnoticed in the youth academy of Lokomotiv Veltem Back-on-Track, Gerkens eventually managed to convince his youth coaches due to his technical skills, combined with some defending and playmaking potential. The Lokomotiv Veltem Back-on-Track commercial department deemed him insufficient for the A-team, but good enough for an international career, allowing Diel to spread the word on the excellent youth academy.
