Chiquesalunga United is a Pennsylvania-based club in the USA. Sporting a tradition of heritage stretching as far back as 13 seasons, it has won four league titles, including one in Division V and three in Division VI. Founded shortly after the beginning of global Season 36, the club won the Season 37 league title in Series VI.462, spent two seasons in Division V, and returned to Division VI with back-to-back Series VI.66 championships in Seasons 40 and 41. The club returned to Division V in Season 42 as part of Series V.117, consistently ranked by Alltid.org as one of the country's toughest fifth division leagues. Chiquesalunga won the V.117 league championship in Season 44 and auto-promoted to Division IV. It currently competes in IV.64 and is currently ranked on Hattrick's "Top 15" list for the region of Pennsylvania.

In addition to its league competitions, Chiquesalunga United maintains a full reserve squad, plays a friendly every available week and is open to friendly challenges.

The club's youth squad, known as the Chiquesalunga Chickies, began competing in early October 2008 and has tallied six youth league titles to date.

Etymology

The club is named after a region along the Susquehanna River in southeastern Pennsylvania that the Lenape called "Chiquesalunga," meaning "place of the crayfish," prior to European colonization. Many present-day landmarks in the area bear names deriving from that term, including Chickies Rock, Chiques Creek, and the village of Salunga, among others. The club's home arena, The Cliff, is named after Chickies Rock, and the club's youth facility, Chickies Rock Park, is named after a real-life park that is popular with rock climbers, hikers, boaters, and hang gliders.

The Chickies Rock area is, in the owner's estimation, one of the most beautiful spots on the planet nobody's heard of.

The area was also the original site chosen for the location of the District of Columbia. The site for the proposed U.S. capital city was later moved further south to the banks of the Potomac River as part of a compromise for the southern states over the settlement of Revolutionary War debt. Because Washington D.C.'s real-life Major League Soccer team is named D.C. United, "United" was also made part of the moniker of this Hattrick team named after the place that almost became Washington, D.C.

Owner

Chiquesalunga United's owner is an aggrandizingly self-deprecating individual who occasionally bandies about important-sounding words like "etymology," "bandies" and "it" for no apparent reason.

A south-central Pennsylvanian, his sports loyalties revolve primarily around the formerly long-suffering burg of Philadelphia. The suffering was briefly eased by the Phillies' 2008 World Series triumph. Since then, though, Philadelphia teams have lost baseball's World Series (2009) and National League Championship Series (2010), ice hockey's Stanley Cup finals (2010), and the Women's Professional Soccer championship game (2010 and 2011), thereby restoring the suffering, along with balance to the universe.

In soccer, he is primarily a supporter of England's Manchester United, owing to his family roots in Stretford (making him, as he his always quick to point out, one of the few foreign Manchester United fans who comes by it honestly), the USL Pro Harrisburg City Islanders, owing to the club's close proximity to his home, and the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer. He additionally has quite a soft spot for the "Red Rebels" of F.C. United of Manchester and Turkey's Beşiktaş, and he was a rather rabid fan of the now unfortunately defunct Women's Professional Soccer's Philadelphia Independence.

Fans

Chiquesalunga United has a fan club numbering 2,701 as of June 18, 2012.

The fan club calls itself "The Sons of Bouva," in honor of both Philadelphia Union's "Sons of Ben" fan club and Lancaster County's Pennsylvania Dutch heritage.

The club's crest, displayed at the upper right-hand corner of this page, is a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch hex sign signifying prosperity and good luck.

History

Chiquesalunga United began its opening season (36) in the second week of the League VI.462 campaign, and the club inherited a first week draw from its predecessor. Shaking off a 5-0 loss in its first competitive match, CU finished fourth in the league at season's end with a 7-6-1 record, and the club went 5-1 in its last six league games under the guidance of interim head coach Earle Clautier. Season 37 began with 31 year-old German midfielder Luigi Vaccarini taking over as head coach and the team's first U.S. Open Cup appearance. The club then proceeded to shock everyone, including its own management, by going 6-0-1 and holding a firm grip on first place in VI.462 in the first half of the league season. In the penultimate week of league play, Chiquesalunga United clinched the VI.462 title, and it finished the season with a 13-0-1 league record.

The club was automatically promoted to Division V for Season 38, and it joined league V.185. Despite a dismal 3-9-2 league record, the team finished sixth in V.185, avoiding automatic relegation and earning a playoff berth, which the club won to remain in the fifth division. United improved its position in the league to fifth place with a drastically better 6-6-2 record in Season 39. However, in what fans now refer to as simply, "The Disaster," United drew as its playoff opponent the winner of Alltid.org's top-ranked Division VI series in the entire USA. Chiquesalunga United lost that game and found itself relegated back to the bottom division.

As a result, Chiquesalunga United was thrown into the toughest sixth-tier league in the country, VI.66, beginning in Season 40. CU managed to win the league's title that year, but it could not get enough points to secure automatic promotion back to Division V and was not able to win its qualifier. Season 41 began with the club advancing to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup for the first time before falling 1-0 to a Division III team. In week 13, Chiquesalunga United clinched its second consecutive VI.66 league title. According to Alltid.org, VI.66 ended up as the second toughest Division VI league in the country in Season 41. The club went on to win its playoff game by a 1-0 margin to return United to Division V for Season 42.

The club joined League V.117 in Season 42. During the season, the club's youth squad earned its first league title, and the senior team finished fifth in the league with a 6-5-3 record, its first winning season in the fifth division.

Ernie Friel, an English winger who had played for United during the previous two seasons, became the club's third head coach at the start of Season 43, and he remains the coach today. Near the end of Season 43, the Chiquesalunga Chickies youth squad sealed up its third consecutive youth league title. The senior squad improved its record to 6-4-4, again finished fifth in V.117, and won its qualifier to return to the league for the third straight year. Season 44 turned out to be the club's best Division V campaign, as it went 12-1-1 in league play to capture the V.117 title and auto-promote to Division IV for Season 45.

On March 28, 2011, Chiquesalunga United became a Top-15 ranked club in the Pennsylvania region of the USA by Hattrick.org for the first time in its history. United was ranked ninth in the region following its Season 45 league-opening win, and it has since moved up as high as sixth in the region's rankings. The club's senior squad ultimately finished second in IV.64 in Season 45, its first campaign in the USA's fourth division. The team finished fourth in IV.64 in Season 46. Early in Season 47, Chiquesalunga United advanced to the fifth round of the U.S. Open Cup for the first time in club history after being knocked out of the cup in the fourth round in each of the previous five consecutive campaigns. The team again advanced to the U.S. Open Cup's fifth round in Season 48.
