Use English words

I will change: Exceptions for countries and regions with: Countries and region must be named with his hattrick name and which english name, if it is not the same, should redirect to his hattrick name.

If nobody dissagry I will change it tomorrow.

--carlesmu 17:49, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Why not today?-) --GM-Lau ;-)
Yes, better now. It's for let people be more involved with the changes. May be some other names should be in other language, but I cannot think in any other; may be somebody dissagree, or prefer another wording. --carlesmu 18:30, 29 November 2005 (UTC) :-P

the only exception should be the country and region pages. all other pages/categories should use the proper english name. for example "German users" instead of "Deutsche user" or "category:Germany" instead of "category:Deutschland". --Shyrlden 19:31, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Lowercase second and subsequent words

Convention: Do not capitalize second and subsequent words unless the title is a proper noun (such as a name) or is otherwise almost always capitalized (for example: "John Wayne", but not "Computer game").

ok, i have checked the wikipedia site for proper nouns. now my question. Schouldn't it be (for example: "John Wayne", but not "Computer Game")? Game is a common noun or not? --Shyrlden 19:03, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Ooops!!! Yes, I'm correcting it. --carlesmu 20:59, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

IMHO we should make a table with more examples. In discogs it looks like this. --User:Shyrlden

In the rationale links there are more examples, it shoud be usefull but I thinks it should be better to write them in another page (may be 'Hattrick:Naming conventions (foo)), I think it's better short sections with references to examples and rationales. --carlesmu 22:16, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Player pages, series pages, territorial categories

i think we need standards for the names above.

  • For players i include the ID in the name. Then it's a unique page name.
  • I have seen different ways for Series names: e.g. III.3 (USA) or Latvia II 2 (i prefer the first variant)
  • same for subcategories. See Category:Latvia for an example. 3 cat.s are name Latvian xyz and 1 is called Regions Latvija. (this should be Latvian Regions in my opinion)

--Shyrlden 16:15, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

I would not use the id in the player's name. Create them under your user namespace, and the problem is solved - besides, when having to access that page you need to type the id too, if i understood the idea right :) as for series, haven't checked the pages myself, but yours look like a good idea. finally, regarding subcategories, i also think some standardization is needed there, not sure which one is the best way though. --duno7 21:35, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

I'm a fan of the first Series name method, but whatever we choose I think it should be addressed in this proposal. For player names I agree we should have the ID in the name. As for subcategories, I think it should be {official country name (not english)} Regions, because it'll get too confusing to make it Latvian. People will think 'Dutch Regions' refers to regions in Deutschland. All three of those things should be addressed in my opinion, though I think player pages are the least important since I really haven't seen a lot of those. --Catalyst 02:03:45, 2005-12-06 (UTC)

Dissambiguation team

I'm not sure if this discussion is taking place at some other article, but i guess this is also the right place. I have come accross certain words where some consensus is needed about them. We need to sort it out somehow, renaming the proper articles, making sure this is consistent with the rest of the wiki, and so on. For example, what about Tactics? It can be used for the special tactics (CA, AIM, ...), for the total set of orders you give to your team (ie man, thats a cool tactic you used to defeat that guy), and some users might also use that word for the formation. This is used in a number of pages, and it is quite inconsistent now. We should set a standard word for each meaning, and make that list accessible to every writer. Another words are Team, Supporter, things like that. I would suggest adding that list on the guidelines article, after discussing the stuff here. --duno7 21:42, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

Line-up (redirects to Formations), Formations and Formation also are problematics, User:ukelele started a thread in Talk:Formation but it is unanswered. The content of Formation it's about 3-5-2, 4-4-2... and Formations it's a mix up of informarion (more or less related to the team formation). I'm not native english and I'm not sure if line-up and formation are exatly the same, if not I think it would be a good idea to split the information between Line-up and Formation (and redirect Formations to Formation).--carlesmu 22:15, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

This has been sorted out, and Formations now redirect to Formation. --EchoMan 14:25, March 2, 2009 (UTC)

Redirects and Arena Pages

I think we should address which redirects are okay and which aren't. For instance, should it be okay to redirect a club's name (I.E. Forsaken BK) to the User club page, or should it only be a redirect from the Team name (ID #), or neither? And should user names be okay to redirect even if they're not really well known? Also, someone is bound to create a page about an arena sooner or later, so we should address that as well. I am of the persuasion that there should never be a separate arena page, and that info on the arena should be on the club page in a subsection, but there are teams like Eesti's Spordiplikad (the guy with the 2.1 million seat arena) that might deserve an arena page. How should we address those? We can't just say they belong on user pages if we let people have them, because some arenas out there deserve to be written about, but the question is should the article go on a team page or a page for the arena? --Catalyst 02:15:39, 2005-12-06 (UTC)

Needs a Full Rewrite (or Write, more accurately)

When I read this policy, it's just too hard to think this is a policy. I'd like to see something the HT Wiki can call its own, instead of mimicing Wiki policies. There are plenty of things that have already been done about naming standards, and those just need to be written formally. Notably:

I'd also like to see other things addressed in this policy:

  • Team Pages: We've already established that teams of significance should have normal pages. The main issue is whether or not team pages about lowly teams (like mine, for example) should be in the main namespace or in the User namespace (or perhaps in a different namespace, like Team:XXX). I think if we just say they shouldn't exist, it's going to cause outrage, as people like to write about themselves. So, we need to come up with the naming policy for those teams deemed "non-notable" (but please don't get into a debate on which teams are notable and which teams aren't, as that will be established in the new Notability policy detailed below).
  • Arena Pages: We're bound to see one or two of these sprout up eventually, and I think the best thing to do is address it now. My personal preference is to just not allow arena pages (but only redirects to the team's page), but we could also just allow these I guess.
  • Player Pages: These have been sprouting up lately and there isn't really a standard naming format yet. I prefer Player Name (ID) myself. Players will be addressed in Notability as well, but unlike team pages I think players deemed "non-notable" simply will be deleted, so there really only needs to be one naming format here.
  • What belongs in the Hattrick: Namespace and what doesn't: We should establish that the Hattrick:XXX namespace is reserved for policies, proposed policies, guidelines, etc (the "behind the scenes" stuff).
  • Naming Images: People seem to choose their image names randomly on here... we should give examples of good names (informative, properly formatted) and poor names (uninformative, crudely formatted, etc). We should also mention that Wiki is not an image host, though this policy probably isn't the best place to do so. There shouldn't be any standard all-encompassing naming format, but names should be clear and easy to understand.

A new policy needs to be made (and I will when I have more time if no one else does) to state Notability. It doesn't belong in Naming Conventions and we've tried too hard here to write the policy about notability, when in fact it should be pretty cut and dry. The policy will be:

It'll mimic WP:NOTE (but relevant to this wiki) and will address team pages, player pages, etc, and whether or not they should exist. -Catalyst 23:00:13, 2006-04-07 (UTC)

Use hattrick naming

Maybe very obvious, but I think it should be added: if possible, a page should be given the same name as a word or term that is used on the English Hattrick site or in the English Hattrick rules.
