Offence

The defence of a team prevents the opponent's offence from scoring a goal. Chances to score a goal in a match are lower when the defence rating is higher than the opponent’s attack rating.

Players in defence are one goalkeeper and up to five defenders. Defenders of all kinds and goalkeeper are the most deciding factors in your defence ratings, which are affected also by inner midfielders and by wingers to a much smaller degree.

Defence can be boosted by having skilled defenders and/or playing with many defenders (i.e. playing 5-3-2 or 5-4-1). This will raise defence ratings and thus reduce the chance of your opponent to score. Tactics like counter-attacks and [pressing]] are based on strong defences.

A defensive minded coach will increase defence ratings by a certain percentage (a boost of 14% to your defence ratings but with a penalty of 8% to your attack ratings).

Defending and Goalkeeping are the only two skills involved in defence ratings, but ratings are affected by every player in the team with the exception of forwards.

Defence is divided in three sectors: central, left and right defence. The attacking offence for each sector will try to break through the defending team’s defence for that sector.
