Een team is de virtuele voetbalploeg die je beheert in Hattrick. Het bestaat uit een aantal virtuele voetbalspelers, gewoonlijk tussen de 20 en 30 (met 50 als maximum). De manager kiest een opstelling met 11 spelers (10 veldspelers en een doelman) voor elke wedstrijd, en ook nog 5 wisselspelers (een aanvaller, middenvelder, vleugelspeler, verdediger en doelman).

Als de 50-spelers limiet wordt overschreden zal de training van die week niet doorgaan. Hou er rekening mee dat de coach als een speler beschouwd wordt.

Elke speler heeft een eigen naam en ID-nummer, samen met zijn huidige leeftijd, en een set van vaardigheden, personaliteit, vorm, ervaring en specialiteiten.

Leeftijd

Een van de kenmerken van een speler is zijn huidige leeftijd. Sinds het begin van (global) seizoen 33 (juli '07) zijn verjaardagen individueel; voordien werden de leeftijden van alle spelers in Hattrick elk seizoen op de maandag voor de eerste bekerwedstrijden aangepast. Toen hadden dus alle spelers dezelfde verjaardag. Een Hattrick jaar telt 112 dagen.

Vorm

vorm is een van de belangrijkste kenmerken voor iedere speler, het bepaald hoe goed hij zijn vaardigheden kan gebruiken. Een goede speler die niet in vorm is zal vaak minder goed presteren in een wedstrijd dan een minder goede speler die wel in vorm is.

Ervaring

Sommige spelers kunnen qua vaardigheden dan wel wat minder zijn, hun kennis van het spel maakt dit meer dan goed. Dus, oude en ervaren spelers spelen vaak beter dan hun jongere, groenere collegas.

Speler Specialiteiten

Sommige van de spelers in Hattrick hebben specialiteiten die hen onderscheiden van andere spelers. Een speler kan maar een specialiteit hebben, niet meer.

Player's specialties are also affected by the weather, for example a Quick player will not play as well as he could in wet and rainy conditions. Also players that have Head as their specialty will be better at scoring headers/clearing headers than another player that does not have the Head specialty.

Personality

Finally, a player also has four personality characteristics, leadership, agreeability, honesty and aggressiveness.

Yellow and Red Cards

Players may get booked or sent off during games. Two bookings during a match will automatically lead to the player being sent off. Bookings and Sending-Offs during competitive games eventually lead to a suspensions. A player will be suspended for the next (competitive, cup or league) match if he is sent off, or if he has accumulated 3 bookings during a season. This is shown by a red card symbol on the player page. You can also see how many yellow cards have been received so far. At the end of the season all cards are cleared.

Whilst a player can receive cards during friendly matches, they have no other effects than those seen during the game.

Highly aggressive players will tend to be booked more often than other players. Especially if they're also dishonest or lacking in experience.

Players who are sent off still receive credit for appearing in the match for training purposes; if a player is sent off in a league match, it is not necessary to also play him in the midweek match.

Retirement

Players do not voluntarily retire from Hattrick. They always assume that they can continue to play and be useful to the club! When a player's skills have declined so much so that he is of no further use to the club and he is of no value as a transfer (or when a player suffers a career-ending injury), he may be fired or retired to the club's Hall of Fame. A fired player is not remembered by name — if you attempt to visit his page, you will find only an impersonal note about where the player was last seen. Occasionally, a fired player will be recycled as an externally-recruited coach.
