Cada equip el porta un usuari humà, que és l'únic responsable de contractar i acomiadar els jugadors, el cos tècnic i l'entrenador, fer l'alineació i la tàctica pels partits oficials, així com planejar un entrenament i una estratègia economia a llarg termini.
Els equips que no els porta ningú es coneixen com equips robot o senzillament bots.
Cada club juga una lliga que dura 16 setmanes. La primera setmana es jugar la primera ronda de la copa. De partits de copa en seguiràs jugant mentre vagis guanyant. Un cop eliminat, pots començar a jugar partits amistosos. Els 14 caps de setmana següents jugues el partits contra els teus rivals de la lliga.
A l'última setmana no es juga cap partit de lliga ni de copa, només es juguen els partits de promoció però se succeeixen un munt d'actualitzacions. Desapareixen les targetes que han acumulat els jugadors durant la temporada i l'estat d'ànim dels aficionats, els patrocinadors i l'esperit d'equip tornen al seu nivell per defecte.
Team Name
As in real life, in Hattrick's world each team has its own individual name, picked by the user on signing up. While each team has a unique ID number, team names are not necessarily unique. Some popular names are used by many teams.
Some team names relate to a real club such as AC Milan. More common are puns like Madchester Untied.

If you want to change the team's name (only possible in the off-season) then you have to pay 10 000 € and 3% of your supporters will leave your team.
Researching Other Teams
It is always useful to research your next opponent by checking their previous games and also their best players. There are several tools to assist in this. Details can be found on the Helper Applications page.

There are a number of special teams in Hattrick. For example teams where all players have the same name, names of real life famous people or something else that make them stand out.
Name Teams
- Frying Pigs (37177), all players' last name is Bacon.
- Bäckströms BK (17105), at one time all players' last name was Bäckström. This theme has since been dropped and the team is now Home-grown and named Absolut Hembränt.
- Nomenklatura (36106), names of real politicians, tv-commentators related with politics, politic analysts.
- Flevo-Ajax (143718), all players have the names of real life football stars.
- Fick-Truppe (1015572), all players (except coach) last name is Fick.
- Redteddy (51233), all players have names of current or previous players in AS Roma.
- Kerrigold FC (825938), all players' last name is Kerry, Kerri, Carey or similar.
- Split Perssonality, Most players last name was Persson. Team is no more.
