Armenia (Հայաստան, Hayastan in Armenian) is a Near East Asian country. It was the 102nd nation to join the Hattrick World.

Geography.png The Republic of Armenia has 3 million ihabitants, but is known for its large external diaspora (8 million by some estimates and greatly exceeding the population of territory itself). Its capital and largest city is Yerevan.
Armenia has an ancient cultural heritage dating back to 9th century BC. The Kingdom of Armenia reached its height between 1st century BC and 4th century AD. It was the first state in the world to adopt Christianity in 301. Armenia was after invaded by the Turks (1045). During World War I, 1.5 million Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire were systematically exterminated in the Armenian Genocide. In 1922 it became a founding member of the Soviet Union. The modern Republic of Armenia became independent in 1991.
Note on country name
"Hayastan" has traditionally been derived from the legendary patriarch Hayk (Հայկ) by addition of the Persian suffix -stan (place); The exonym Armenia is attested in the Old Persian (515 BC) and Ancient Greek (c. 550 BC – c. 476 BC) and it could refer to an unidentified inhabitants of the area mentioned by the Egyptians many centuries earlier.
