The Hattrick World Cup is an international tournament for national teams held since Hattrick season 15.
A new World Cup starts as soon as has finished the previous one, which lasts exactly two seasons, one almost entirely dedicated to the qualifying stage and the other to the final stage.
The final stage of a World Cup campaign is hosted by one country, determined by the HT team. For example, the first World Cup ever was hosted by Nippon and Hanguk back in 2002, the year these countries also hosted the real-life FIFA world cup. The same happened again for 2006 (Germany), for 2010 (South Africa) and last time for 2014 (Brazil).
Format
The Continental Championships begins every second season (in even seasons to be precise). Depending on the results in the continental championships, some teams qualify directly for the World Cup, while others have to play an additional "wildcard" play-off. A total of 96 teams enter the next World Cup.
The first stage of World Cup, which kicks off in week 13 of the first season, starts with groups decided by a live draw based on seeding determined by regional tournaments ranking. The teams that do not qualify for the actual World Cup will play a consolation tournament called the Nations Cup, which takes place at the same time as the World Cup.
The World Cup continues through the whole second season. It is divided into 5 group stage rounds and it culminates in knockout playoff games with the semi-finals and the final. On summary:
- Continental championship (on local ground) from Weeks 1 to 12 of the first season
- Qualifier: all national teams in 4 tournaments (Americas, Africa, Europe and Asia-Oceania).
- World Cup (on hosting nation ground) from Week 13 of the first season to Week 16 of the second season
- Stage 1: 96 teams in 16 groups of 6 teams each, first four pass to next stage;
- Stage 2: 64 teams in 16 groups of 4 teams each, first two pass to next stage;
- Stage 3: 32 teams in 8 groups of 4 teams each, first two pass to next stage;
- Stage 4: 16 teams in 4 groups of 4 teams each, first two pass to next stage;
- Stage 5: 8 teams in 2 groups of 4 teams each, first two pass to next stage;
- Knockout Stage: 2 Semi-finals and the Final, played on last sunday of season at 20:00 HT.
Old format
The long-lasting old format has remained unchanged from edition 5 to edition 32 and it was totally different It started with a round I or "qualification" to which all national teams from all countries in Hattrick took part in; only the first two passed to the next stage. Then there were three round-robin group stages, with 4 teams per group and with the first two teams qualifying for the next stage. The last two rounds were semi-finals and finals.
When no World Cup matches were scheduled, the national teams can play friendlies.
Editions
World Cup has been hosted twice by only one country which is Brazil. Only 2 nations won World Cup playing at home: Germany and Portugal.
The World Cup has visited, 3 African, 3 North American, 5 South American and 7 Asian countries. Plus, WC was hold in Oceania once and in Europe the other times.
Medals
The champion is awarded with the gold medal, the runner-up NT receives the silver medal, the losers of the semifinals both receive a bronze medal without a further playoff game.
The World Cup was won more than once only by Italy, Chile, Germany, Norway, Netherlands and Sweden that is also the most victorious NT, winning World Cups I, II, III and V, VI, VII (at the time, Sverige had a significant advantage in quality of players due to the age of their league and the number of teams in it).

Interview with NT Golden coaches Written by HPE-Flatron (26/12/2015 16:12)
One can say that, being the coach of a National Team, requests a lot of responsibility about touching your goal/limit and making sure the community is happy about their country's results. But, the real hero is the user who manages to receive the gold medal at the World Cup.
How does it feel to succeed? We asked it to the "Golden coaches", the managers who won the World Cup: the elite of the elite.
Here are the replies of the gold medal winning NT Coaches
WC V, Sweden, DrPOMO (57484)
After being assistant manager for the Swedish National Team for five seasons, I was persuaded to run for the National Manager position. When I was assisting DrDDD, Sweden won WC II and WC III. When Norway won WC IV, I knew that they have made a few smart decisions which made them entering the tournament with much higher team spirit than Sweden. I was convinced that I could learn from this and bring the WC back home again.
I remember it was tough protecting the Swedish players from being murdered. That took a lot of effort. When the WC V tournament started, Sweden had maximum Team Spirit and the best players. Anything but a victory would have been disappointing. Some of the matches required a lot of analysis before setting the match orders, but in the end one of the strongest feelings was relief. Everybody had expected Sweden to win WC V. I was though of course also very happy, but also exhausted.
After that, WC was never the same. No nation has ever been as dominating as Sweden were during the first five World Cups.
WC VII, Sweden, GM‑Tonkan (8062)
When we stood victorious for the last time after a long row of gold medals, the community was impressed and happy. But, to be honest, the Swedish community by this point only had a small interest in the national team, so it was not as big as I would have liked. Although it was a exciting championship with a lot of great and close game between a Swedish national team that no longer could been so unbeatable. So, I am sorry for all the users that was not interested because it was a great championship.
WC VIII, Germany, GM‑Rolli (185302)
I needed a few runs in the elections before I became the NT coach. I was elected during a campaign because the current coach had left Hattrick. It was very surprising to me that so many people believed in me and gave me their votes. After the final victory, I felt happy and I was also very proud. Also, I was grateful for all the people that helped me with the set up for final. It was a really tight game and I was happy to crown the World Cup with the gold medal.
WC IX, Estonia, kyps_ee (94872)
It was big responsibility while Estonia had a very active HT community. In that time, we had already team which was equal strong even against the bigger countries.
The feeling after winning the final was unbelievable. Whole community was full of joy.
At same time, I was morally exhausted because in campaign we had a lot of tight situations.
WC X, Portugal, brusque (staff member) (2119007)
At the time we wanted the challenge of playing Hattrick at its most difficult level the way we thought it should be played. We were able to do that quite well and, most importantly, were capable of immersing the Portuguese community in the whole process. It was hectic, loud and a lot of fun. It was also the realization that Hattrick, as a game, would never again be that rewarding for ourselves.
WC XI, Czech Republic, Ziky1 (1795287)
Leading National Team was a huge honor, challenge and simultaneously I saw it as a commitment. When I took over the team, I wanted to win WC (what many considered impossible according to the quality of our team) and because of this I gave maximal preparation to every single match. Detailed analysis of each opponent was matter of course. When I managed to win WC, it was indescribable feeling. I felt euphoric as if we won the real football WC.
WC XIV, Greece, cheetoss (3909171)
There isn't Hattrick without National Teams. The emotions we felt those days until the conquest of our gold medal can not be described in words. For all of us, the National team was our first team. It was our school for the game. Our passion to play.... We felt in love with the team and then we felt in love with the game :)
WC XV, Norge, HPE‑regia5 (911825)
To win the World Cup with Norge was something special. They're great people, and I love to be part of that community (I also attended 2 meetings in Oslo). To win the World Cup for them, was sublime. They had trust in me, and I repayed them with an unexpected success. And, on a personal point of view, it was the result of months/years of hard work. I'll always have Norge in my heart, and I'll always remember the players who won the Cup with me, and all the managers who helped me in the process.
WC XVI, Denmark, Junker (1540377)
For me it was a "must try" thing to be a national coach. And when the NT team went out in round two/tree in my first turn I was so disappointed. This was not what I wanted to do. Fortunate enough, the community elected me for the second turn. And this time it went much better. We won the final against Sweden. After this people always think that I must be knowing everything about Hattrick, and really: I do not.
WC XVII, Chile, TituladoBugnosSchool (4704242)
To be the Chile's NT Coach was the best experience in all my HT-life. I had a really good time leading my national team, thinking how to play and talking and joking with all the friends I knew beeing the coach. I think National Teams are my favourite part of HT, and when we won our 1st gold I was very happy and I thought: "mission accomplished".
WC XVIII, Poland, star‑ter (6896373)
The successful World Cup campaign with the Polish NT was the highlight of my career in Hattrick. It's not just because we won the most important trophy in the game, but also because we managed to do it as a community, where more than a hundred people contributed to the success. The interaction between people - the teamwork or cooperation on one hand and rivalry and competition on the other - is definitely my favourite aspect of the game.
WC XXIII, Canada, VsTheWorld (2525883)
Scouts, advisers and, of course, trainers deserve most of the credit. I'm happy for all that put any amount of work into the team, to have that work validated with a win. Being the leader was only a small part of it all.
As for how I felt when we won the gold medal, "shocked" sums it up nicely. Shocked that luck was finally on our side. :)
