He is good friends with his team mate [[Red Star Gent/Tom Gaal|Tom Gaal]], who is dating Joëls' sister Lisa. Joël Crahay himself is engaged to Laura Vandebrempt, a 20-year old History Student at Ghent University.
Meerbergen is considered to be a player that sometimes provokes controversy around his person. He is a Don Juan who is often to be found in Nightclubs in Ghent, much to dismay of the Staff at [[Red Star Gent]].
