Each tactic's effectiveness depends on specific player skills. In addition, each has drawbacks that should be taken into consideration when using them.

Advantage: Pressing means that all players focus on putting pressure on their opponents, decreasing the total number of chances for the opponent team.
Pressing means that all players focus on putting pressure on their opponents. They also put slightly more effort into breaking up opponent attacks than trying to create their own.  The result is that the total number of chances in the game gets reduced for both teams. When you play pressing, all your players (except the goalkeeper) need excellent stamina and defending.

Advantage: Counter-attack is a tactic which involves giving up midfield dominance in an attempt to score goals by counter-attacking. This can be very effective when used by a suitable team against an overwhelming opponent, as this tactic increases the overall number of chances of the team with the weaker midfield. The limit of counter-attacks because of the tactical setting is 3 per game, but there is always a chance for a counter-attack to be created when the attacking team has a weak attack against a good defense. While counter-attacks based on the tactical setting only can be generated if the CA-team has lower ball possession "non-tactic-counter-attacks" can occur any time.

Disadvantage: A team playing counter attacks takes a penalty of about 7% to its midfield rating compared to playing normal.(NOTE: the corresponding loss of possession will always be less than 1.81% (350/193% exactly)). If you're dominating the midfield, then you will just suffer the disadvantage. And note that you have to be losing midfield before the 7% tactical penalty is applied).
This tactic is mostly chosen by defender trainers who have a very strong defense, but a weak midfield. A team playing counter attacks takes a penalty of about 7% to its midfield rating compared to playing normal. A successful counter attack strategy will require a rock-solid defense, and then enough offense to score on the few opportunities that are created.

Relevant skills: A successful counter attack strategy will require a rock-solid defense, and then enough offense to score on the few opportunities that are created. The total sum of your defenders' passing and defending skills determine your CA tactical skill. Passing is twice as important as defending.
This tactic does NOT decrease the overall number of chances per game - that can only be achived by pressing.
This tactic is mostly chosen by managers with very strong defense but weak midfield like Defending trainers (or Scoring trainers playing 4-3-3 and 5-2-3).

Advantage: When using attack in the middle (AIM), your team attempts to make more attacks using midfielders than with wingers.  The total number of attacks remains constant. Around 15-30% of your wing attacks will be converted to attacks in the middle.

The rules also mention that the percentage of gaining extra attacks can increase as much as 40%. This rating is calculated for each player in middle, by using their passing skills as a starter point.

Relevant skills: Your outfielders' scoring and set pieces skills determine the LS tactical skill. Scoring is three times more important than set pieces.

This page describes tactics as in special orders (CA, AIM, etc). For other uses of Tactics, see Tactics (disambiguation)

There are six individual types of tactics besides the normal tactic: Pressing, Counter attack (CA), Attack in the Middle (AiM), Attack on Wings (AoW), Long shots (LS) and Play Creatively (PC).

Each tactic's effectiveness depends on specific player skills. In addition, each has drawbacks that should be taken into consideration when using them.

Pressing

      Further information: Pressing

Pressing means that all players focus on putting pressure on their opponents. They also put slightly more effort into breaking up opponent attacks than trying to create their own. The result is that the total number of chances in the game gets reduced for both teams. When you play pressing, all your players (except the goalkeeper) need excellent stamina and defending.

Counter-Attack

      Further information: Counter attack

Counter-attack is a tactic which involves giving up midfield dominance in an attempt to score goals by counter-attacking. This can be very effective when used by a suitable team against an overwhelming opponent, as this tactic decreases the overall number of chances both sides have to score.

This tactic does NOT decrease the overall number of chances per game - that can only be achived by pressing. The limit of counter-attacks because of the tatical setting is limited to 3 per game but there is always a chance for a counter-attack to be created when the attacking team has a weak attack against a good defense. While counter-attacks based on the tactical setting only can be generated if the CA-team has lower ball possesion "non-tactic-counter-attacks" can occur any time.

NOTE: the corresponding loss of possession will always be less than 1.81% (350/193% exactly)

Attack in the middle

Further information: Attack in the middle

When using attack in the middle (AIM), your team attempts to make more attacks using midfielders than with wingers. The total number of attacks remains constant, though the disadvantage of this tactic is that your wing defense becomes proportionally worse.

The rules also mention that the percentage of gaining extra attacks can increase as much as 40%. This rating is calculated for each player in middle, by using their passing skills as a starter point.

Attack on Wings

      Further information: Attack on wings

Similar to attack in the middle, only in reverse. Instead of more attacks coming in the center, you get more of your attacks on the wings. The disadvantage is that it weakens your central defense.z

Long Shots

      Further information: Long shot tactics

Long shots is an attacking option for teams who have problems scoring on regular side/middle attacks, but it could also be a tactical option for any team facing a really strong defense. This tactic was introduced in the beginning of global season 38, as announced on the 26th of January 2009.

Long Shots

This tactic was the last introduced in the beginning of global season 38.

Play Creatively

      Further information: Play creatively

When you use play creatively, there is a greater chance that special events (both positive and negative) will occur for both teams during the match. If both teams use play creatively, this chance is even higher. Teams playing creatively will be less focused on defense. Playing creatively is most effective for teams that have many players with specialties.
