The Republic of Nicaragua (known as the "land of lakes and volcanoes") is the largest country in the American isthmus. Managua is the country's capital and largest city. The multi-ethnic population of 6.5 million includes people of indigenous, European, African, and Asian heritage. The mixture of traditions has generated substantial cultural diversity.
The region was conquered by the Spanish Empire in the 16th century. Nicaragua gained independence from Spain in 1821, but the Mosquito Coast followed a different historical path, coming under British rule - its northernmost part was transferred to Honduras only in 1960.
