Sealand Cup XVIII was the eighteenth edition of the Sealand Cup, the friendly competition of the Sealand federation and was held in (Dutch) season 36. The final was held at Ugliest Place on 15 February 2012, where Limburgia FC defeated Sherlock's Boys 4–1. Defending champions FC Sammie de Cavia were eliminated in the semi-finals by Sherlock's Boys.

Participating teams

24 teams participated in Sealand Cup XVII, including two previous champions. Three teams made their début. FC Sammie de Cavia became the first team to participate in eleven Sealand Cups.

Seeding

The draw for the group stage was held in Heeze on 21 December 2011.

Teams were seeded into four pots based on their Sealand-Coefficient. The Sealand-Coefficient was determined by league level, league results, highest four Hatstats in league matches and results in the previous three Sealand Cups. Teams from the same region could not be drawn against each other and groups could not contain more than one Belgian team. Title holder FC Sammie de Cavia was automatically drawn into the Owl Group.

Fixtures

The order of the fixtures was drawn after the draw for the group stage. There were six possible combinations in which the group matches could be played, the rounds being:

  • Group Round A: Pot I Team vs. Pot III Team / Pot II Team vs. Pot IV Team
  • Group Round B: Pot II Team vs. Pot III Team / Pot IV Team vs. Pot I Team
  • Group Round C: Pot I Team vs. Pot II Team / Pot III Team vs. Pot IV Team

Each group had at least one non-Dutch team. These teams could not play at home during the final group round. As a result, draw for the order of group rounds did exclude such combinations from the draw. Non-Dutch teams in Pot I could only play Round B as final round; non-Dutch teams in Pot II could only play Round C as final round; non-Dutch teams in Pot III could only play Rounds A and B as final round; and non-Dutch teams in Pot IV could only play Rounds A and C as final round. As there were seven non-Dutch participants; one group contained two non-Dutch teams. In case there was no schedule in which both non-Dutch teams played away during the last group round, the restrictions for the fixtures were canceled for that group.

Group Stage

The Group Stage of the eighteenth Sealand Cup ran from 28 December 2011 to 12 January 2012. Four matchdays were scheduled. In case a match was not played at the original matchday; it was rescheduled to the fourth matchday.

Format

The teams in each group played each other in a single round-robin format, playing the other teams in the group once (at home or away). Each team earned 3 points for a win in regular time, 2 points for a win after golden goal or after a penalty shoot-out, 1 point for a loss after golden goal or after a penalty shoot-out and 0 points for a loss in regular time. For goal difference purposes, winning a penalty shoot-out was rewarded with one extra goal (equal to scoring a golden goal). This point system is similar to the system used by the (real-life) IIHF for international ice hockey matches.

The top-two teams of each group and the four best third-placed teams advanced to the second round (round of sixteen). If two or more teams were level on points, the head-to-head result was the main tie-breaking criterium.

Knockout Stage

The next stage of the tournament was the Knockout Stage. Sixteen teams qualified for this stage (the group winners and runners-up from all four groups, accompanied by the four best third-placed teams). Teams tied on points would be ranked by the results between the top-three teams only.

Draw

The teams were seeded first to sixteenth, based on their result in the group stage (only results between the top-three teams were taken into account when teams were tied on points). In the second round, the highest-seeded teams would face the lowest-seeded teams at home. The teams were not re-seeded for the subsequent rounds, meaning that the highest-seeds would only face the lowest-seeded teams if all higher-seeded teams would win. In case the higher-seeded team would win each match, the first seed would face the sixteenth seed in the second round; the eighth seed in the quarterfinals; the fourth seed in the semi-finals; and the second seed in the final. One exception was made for teams that qualified from the same group: these teams could not meet each other in the second round.

If a team did not answer a challenge, a wildcard team was selected to take their place. This was the highest-ranked available team that did not qualify originally. Because most other matches had already been scheduled by that time, wildcard teams could potentially play against a team that qualified for the same group (in the end, two wildcard teams qualified and both played against a team they already played in the group stage).

The quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals were played at a neutral venue. Ugliest Place, the home stadium of Not That Good, was selected as host of the final. This was the fifth consecutive time the final was played at that venue, but the first time after renaming. The previous finals were played when the stadium was called Sealandisch Boorplatform.

  • FC Jaapo qualified for the Second Round after Collectief Aan Ons Gerief did not answer the challenge from their first opponent.
  • TSV Oosterhout (fourth place in the Condor Group) qualified for the Second Round after Loosertjes did not answer the challenge from their first opponent. KV Red Star Waasland–SK Beveren had already scheduled another match, so TSV Oosterhout was the highest-seeded team available to take Loosertjes' spot. Because original qualifier Loosertjes (sixteenth seed) could not be drawn against Limburgia (first seed) as they qualified from the same group, TSV Oosterhout played against HetBeste.
