Lathrop is a former USA National coach and owner of II.4 club Blue Wave.

In his first term as National Trainer he led the USA NT to Round IV of World Cup VII, the team's highest finish in the current format of the World Cup. In his second term, the USA finished last in their Round III group. The USA has only advanced to Round III one other time in the current World Cup format.

Lathrop chose to MOTS Norge in Match 1 of Round III of World Cup VII in an often critiqued move. Though the USA lost the next two matches, the team still advanced out of a three-way tie for second place in the group with the best goal differential, thanks in large part to the 4 - 0 defeat of Norge in the first match.
