Sealand Cup XVI was the sixteenth edition of the Sealand Cup, the friendly competition of the Sealand federation and was held in (Dutch) season 34. The final was held at Sealandisch Boorplatform on 6 July 2011, where De Snelle Jelles defeated Sherlock's Boys 1–0. Defending champions SC RedHead were eliminated in the semi-finals by De Snelle Jelles.

Participating teams

28 teams participated in Sealand Cup XVI, including three previous champions. Nine teams made their début. Kings Squad became the first team to participate in ten Sealand Cups and Utrechtseboys broke the record of most consecutive participations (previously shared with Dashit Kabomb and Tijny Devils).

Seeding

The draw for the group stage was held in Heeze on 4 May 2011.

Teams were seeded into four pots based on their Sealand-Coefficient. The Sealand-Coefficient was determined by league level, highest number of Hatstats in league matches and results in the previous two Sealand Cups. Teams from the same region could not be drawn against each other (except for regions with more than seven participants) and groups could not contain more than one non-Dutch team. Title holder SC RedHead was automatically drawn into Group Zeus.

The standard fixtures of each group were:

  • Group Round 1: Pot I Team vs. Pot III Team / Pot II Team vs. Pot IV Team
  • Group Round 2: Pot II Team vs. Pot III Team / Pot IV Team vs. Pot I Team
  • Group Round 3: Pot I Team vs. Pot II Team / Pot III Team vs. Pot IV Team

Group Round 2 and 3 would be reversed in groups with non-Dutch teams, to ensure all final group matches were played in the Netherlands.

Group Stage

The Group Stage of the sixteenth Sealand Cup ran from 19 January to 9 February 2011.

Format

The teams in each group played each other in a single round-robin format, playing the other teams in the group once (at home or away). Each team earned 3 points for a win in regular time, 2 points for a win after golden goal or after a penalty shoot-out, 1 point for a loss after golden goal or after a penalty shoot-out and 0 points for a loss in regular time. For goal difference purposes, winning a penalty shoot-out was rewarded with one extra goal (equal to scoring a golden goal). This point system is similar to the system used by the (real-life) IIHF for international ice hockey matches.

The top-two teams of each group and the two best third-placed teams advanced to the second group stage. If two or more teams were level on points, the head-to-head result was the main tie-breaking criterium.

Second Group Stage

The second stage of the tournament was the Second Group Stage. Sixteen teams qualified for this stage (the group winners and runners-up from all four groups, accompanied by the two best third-placed teams). Teams that were tied on points with teams that had won one match by walk-over were only ranked by their results against the top-three teams in their group, to make a fairer comparision (as a walk-over victory had not been awarded with any goals).

Draw

The teams were seeded first to sixteenth, based on their result in the group stage. The teams were divided in four groups by a modified serpentine system, with seeds 1, 8, 12 and 13 qualifying for the Olympic Group; seeds 2, 7, 11 and 14 qualifying for the Pythian Group; seeds 3, 6, 10 and 15 qualifying for the Nemean Group; and seeds 4, 5, 9 and 16 qualifying for the Isthmian Group. The eight higher-seeded teams played two matches at home and the eight lower-seeded teams played one match at home.

Note: for comparision, the goals against the fourth-placed team were excluded for Meteora (3–0) and TSV Oosterhout (6–1). R.C. Vozzko and Koehorstjes had been awarded three points without any goals (de facto 0–0 victory).

FC Sammie de Cavia qualified for the Second Group Stage after Meteora did not answer the challenge from their first opponent. Koehorstjes and TSV Oosterhout had already scheduled other matches, so FC Sammie de Cavia was the highest-seeded team available to take Meteora's spot.

Knockout Stage

The final stage of the tournament was the Knockout Stage. Eight teams qualified for this stage (the group winners and runners-up from all groups).

Draw

The teams were seeded first to eighth, based on their result in the second group stage (group winners were seeded 1–4 and runners-up were seeded 5–8). In the quarterfinals, the highest-seeded teams would face the lowest-seeded teams at home. In the semi-finals, the winners of the matches involving the first and fourth seed would play in the first match, while the winners of the matches involving the second and the third seed would play in the other match. The semi-finals and finals were played at a neutral venue. Sealandisch Boorplatform, the home stadium of Sealandisch Nationaal Elftal, was selected as host of the final for the third consecutive time.
