Sealand Cup XXXV was the thirty-fifth edition of the Sealand Cup, the friendly competition of the Sealand federation and was held in (Dutch) season 53. The final was held at Kings Castle on 26 April 2017, where title holder RKTVV defeated FC Jaapo 4–1.

Seeding

The draw for the group stage was held in Heeze on 8 March 2017.

Teams were seeded into four pots based on their Sealand-Coefficient. The Sealand-Coefficient was determined by league level, league results, Hatstats and results in the previous three Sealand Cups. Teams from the same region could not be drawn against each other. Twenty-five teams originally entered the Sealand Cup, with FC Jaapo acting as stand-by team. Title holder RKTVV was still active in a challenger cup at the time of the draw and therefore FC Jaapo was included in the draw.

FC Sammie de Cavia and De Barracuda wished to enter the Sealand Cup after the draw had taken place. To include them in the competition, an additional group was created with RKTVV (provided they were eliminated from their challenger cup) and those two teams.

The Sealand-Coefficients were slightly changed after the draw because of the participation of FC Sammie de Cavia, De Barracuda and RKTVV (because the scores were partially dependent on the quality of other participants). The initial Sealand-Coefficients (used at the time of the draw) are striken through in the seedings below.

Group Stage

The Group Stage of the thirty-fifth Sealand Cup ran from 15 to 29 March 2017.

Format

The teams in each group played each other in a single round-robin format, playing the other teams in the group once (at home or away). Each team earned 3 points for a win in regular time, 2 points for a win after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out, 1 point for a loss after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out and 0 points for a loss in regular time. For goal difference purposes, matches decided after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out were treated as if the match had been decided after a golden goal (regardless of the actual number of goals scored). This point system is similar to the system used by the (real-life) IIHF for international ice hockey matches. The order of play in each group was pre-determined: the highest-seeded team would face the teams from Pot III, IV and II in that particular order in the Green Group, the Blue Group and the Purple Group; the highest-seeded team would face the teams from Pot III, II and IV in that particular order in the Red Group, the Orange Group and the Yellow Group (the second and third round were switched because matches in the third week had to be played in the Netherlands) and the White Group - which only contained three teams - where the highest-seeded team had a bye in the first round and faced the loser and the winner of the first match in that particular order in the remaining rounds.

The top-two teams of each group and the two best third-placed teams advanced to the second round (round of sixteen). If two or more teams were level on points, the head-to-head result was the main tie-breaking criterium.

Knockout Stage

The next stage of the tournament was the Knockout Stage. Sixteen teams qualified for this stage (the group winners and runners-up from all seven groups, accompanied by the two best third-placed teams). Teams tied on points would be ranked by the results between the top-three teams only.

Draw

The teams were seeded first to sixteenth, based on their result in the group stage (only results between the top-three teams were taken into account when teams were tied on points). In the second round, the highest-seeded teams would face the lowest-seeded teams at home. The teams received a new seeding after each round, which included the results of the previous match. This means that the bracket was not fixed and all teams could face each other in subsequent rounds, depending on how they performed. One exception was made for teams that qualified from the same group: these teams could not meet each other in the second round.

The quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals were played at a neutral venue. Kings Castle, the home stadium of Kings Squad (team with the highest number of championships), was selected as host of the final. If title holder RKTVV had lost their semi-final, their own home stadium would have been selected instead.
