Sealand Cup XXVIII was the twenty-eight edition of the Sealand Cup, the friendly competition of the Sealand federation and was held in (Dutch) season 46. The final was held at De Houten Keet on 11 March 2015, where 1Utreg1 defeated Dispar Vulgo FC 4–1 in a rematch of the final two seasons ago. Title holder Als Hij Ons Maar Niet Fluit was eliminated by Dispar Vulgo FC in the semi-finals.

Participating teams

28 teams participated in Sealand Cup XXVIII, including six previous champions. One team made their début. One extra club participated to make up the field. The Di Angelo and Limburgia FC entered as a stand-by teams and would have participated if other teams were still active in a cup tournament at the time of the first match. They ultimately did not participate, although Limburgia FC played in one match as an out-of-competition replacement.

Seeding

The draw for the group stage was held in Heeze on 21 January 2015.

Teams were seeded into four pots based on their Sealand-Coefficient. The Sealand-Coefficient was determined by league level, league results, Hatstats and results in the previous three Sealand Cups. Teams from the same region could not be drawn against each other. Title holder Als Hij Ons Maar Niet Fluit was seeded into first position (regardless of their coefficient) and automatically drawn into the Golden Group.

Group Stage

The Group Stage of the twenty-eighth Sealand Cup ran from 27 January to 11 February 2015.

Format

The teams in each group played each other in a single round-robin format, playing the other teams in the group once (at home or away). Each team earned 3 points for a win in regular time, 2 points for a win after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out, 1 point for a loss after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out and 0 points for a loss in regular time. For goal difference purposes, matches decided after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out were treated as if the match had been decided after a golden goal (regardless of the actual number of goals scored). This point system is similar to the system used by the (real-life) IIHF for international ice hockey matches. The order of play in each group was decided by draw.

The top-two teams of each group and the two best third-placed teams advanced to the second round (round of sixteen). If two or more teams were level on points, the head-to-head result was the main tie-breaking criterium.

Knockout Stage

The next stage of the tournament was the Knockout Stage. Sixteen teams qualified for this stage (the group winners and runners-up from all seven groups, accompanied by the two best third-placed teams). Teams tied on points would be ranked by the results between the top-three teams only.

Draw

The teams were seeded first to sixteenth, based on their result in the group stage (only results between the top-three teams were taken into account when teams were tied on points). In the second round, the highest-seeded teams would face the lowest-seeded teams at home. The teams received a new seeding after each round, which included the results of the previous match. This means that the bracket was not fixed and all teams could face each other in subsequent rounds, depending on how they performed. One exception was made for teams that qualified from the same group: these teams could not meet each other in the second round.

The quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals were played at a neutral venue. De Houten Keet, the home stadium of Als Hij Ons Maar Niet Fluit (winner of the previous edition), was selected as host of the final. If Als Hij Ons Maar Niet Fluit had won their semi-final, Hideous Ruin would have been selected instead.

  • According to the fixtures, Als Hij Ons Maar Niet Fluit had to play NIHE, but they could not meet again (as both teams qualified from the Golden Group). As they were the highest- and lowest-ranked qualifiers, no draw had to take place to determine each team's opponent: Als Hij Ons Maar Niet Fluit would play Rohda Raalte and NIHE would play D.W.I.W.
