Republic of the Philippines (Republika ng Pilipinas in local language) is a Far East Asian country. It was the 47th nation to join the Hattrick World.

Philippines consists of about 7 641 islands in the western Pacific Ocean on the Ring of Fire and close to the equator. It had a population of at least 100 million, but approximately an additional 10% of Filipinos lived overseas. The capital and most populous city is Manila.
The Philippines was named in honor of King Philip II of Spain. In 1521, explorer Magellan arrived in the Philippines, claimed the islands for Spain and was then killed in battle. From 1565 to 1821, the Philippines was governed as a territory of the Mexico-based Viceroyalty of New Spain. The islands were then ceded by Spain to the United States and by 1946 was recognized as an independent nation.


History
