Sealand Cup XLVI was the forty-sixth edition of the Sealand Cup, the friendly competition of the Sealand federation and was held in (Dutch) season 64. The final was held at Het IJskonijnenhol on 20 September 2020, where Azzato's Mighty Heroes won their first Sealand Cup by defeating two-time defending champions FC Jaapo 3–0.

Participating teams

Thirty-six teams participated in Sealand Cup XLVI, including ten previous champions. HVSV '05 made their début. Malus Alces entered as a stand-by team if there would be an odd number of participants and therefore they did ultimately not participate.

Seeding

The draw for the group stage was held in Heeze on 29 July 2020.

Teams were seeded based on their Sealand-Coefficient, which was solely determined by results in all previous Sealand Cups, with results losing a quarter of their value each season. The teams were divided in two pots; the top-quarter (seeded teams) in Pot I and the remaining teams (unseeded) in Pot II.

Teams from the same region could not be drawn against each other. Title holder FC Jaapo was seeded into Pot I (regardless of their coefficient) and automatically drawn into the Golden Group. Als Hij Ons Maar Niet Fluit (previous season's runner-up) was automatically drawn into the Sapphire Group. Fort Roughs Cup holder RKTVV could not be seeded lower than fifteenth (their final position in the previous season).

Group Stage

The Group Stage of the forty-sixth Sealand Cup ran from 4 to 19 August 2020.

Format

The teams in each group played each other in a single round-robin format, playing the other teams in the group once (at home or away). Each team earned 3 points for a win in regular time, 2 points for a win after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out, 1 point for a loss after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out and 0 points for a loss in regular time. For goal difference purposes, matches decided after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out were treated as if the match had been decided after a golden goal (regardless of the actual number of goals scored). This point system is similar to the system used by the (real-life) IIHF for international ice hockey matches.

The order of play for all groups was drawn at once, which resulted in the Pot I team to face the middle-, highest- and lowest-seeded Pot II team in that order. An exception was made for the Golden and Violet Groups (the second and third round were switched) and for the Indigo Group (the first and third round were switched) because matches in the third week had to be played in the Netherlands.

The top-two teams of each group, the best third-place teams and one wild card team advanced to the second round (round of twenty-four). All other teams qualified for the Fort Roughs Cup. If two or more teams were level on points, the head-to-head result was the main tie-breaking criterium.

Wild card

One team could receive a wild card for the knockout stage, based on the fair play classification. The team with the best fair play record (10 points for each match played, 3 penalty points for each single yellow card and 9 penalty points for each red card) received the wild card and was seeded tenth (best non-group winner) for the round of twenty-four.

Group winners (shaded blue in this ranking) could not receive the wild card (as they were already assured of a top-nine seeding). If multiple teams were eligible, the team with the best group stage results received the wild card. If no teams were eligible (all teams with the best fair play record were group winners), this spot in the knockout stage was transferred to the next-best third-placed team.

Knockout Stage

The next stage of the tournament was the Knockout Stage. Twenty-four teams qualified for this stage (the group winners and runners-up from all nine groups, accompanied by the five best third-placed teams and the wild card team). Teams tied on points would be ranked by the results between the top-three teams only.

The number of qualified teams (24) was not a power of two. Therefore it was possible for losing teams to advance to the next stage as a lucky loser. After the second round, two teams qualified as a lucky loser (leaving fourteen teams in contention) and after the third round, one team qualified as a lucky loser (leaving eight teams in contention). From that point on, the knockout stage was a true knock-out format.

Draw

The teams were seeded first to twenty-fourth, based on their result in the group stage (only results between the top-three teams were taken into account when teams were tied on points). In the second round, the highest-seeded teams would face the lowest-seeded teams at home. The teams received a new seeding after each round, which included the results of the previous match. This means that the bracket was not fixed and all teams could face each other in subsequent rounds, depending on how they performed. One exception was made for teams that qualified from the same group: these teams could not meet each other in the second round.

The third round, quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals were played at a neutral venue. Het IJskonijnenhol, the home stadium of Appy United, was selected as host of the final. This venue won a poll to determine the final host. Other nominated stadiums for this poll were Waaier (who received a semi-final), 't Vossenhol (who received a quarterfinal), Markettenweg (who received the small final), Het Weiland (who received a quarterfinal), FC Kneuzenarena, The Big House and Angels United Arena.
