Sealand Cup XXXVIII was the thirty-eighth edition of the Sealand Cup, the friendly competition of the Sealand federation and was held in (Dutch) season 56. The final was held at Lutjegast ArenA on 4 April 2018, where De Snelle Jelles defeated FB Athletic 7–1 to win their second Sealand Cup, twenty-two seasons after their first championship. Defending champions RKTVV did not compete in the tournament.

Participating teams

28 teams participated in Sealand Cup XXXVIII, including eight previous champions. There were no debuting teams (for the third time in Sealand Cup history). De Barracuda was still active in a national cup tournament at the time of the draw and could eventually not participate.

Seeding

The draw for the group stage was held in Heeze on 14 February 2018.

Teams were seeded into four pots based on their Sealand-Coefficient. The Sealand-Coefficient was determined by league level, league results, Hatstats and results in the previous three Sealand Cups. Teams from the same region could not be drawn against each other. Fc Ajax Sneek 08 did not confirm their participation until after the draw, and was automatically placed in the group that had three teams. This meant that they were de facto seeded into Pot IV (although this would not have changed if they had entered the tournament earlier).

Group Stage

The Group Stage of the thirty-eighth Sealand Cup ran from 21 February to 7 March 2018.

Format

The teams in each group played each other in a single round-robin format, playing the other teams in the group once (at home or away). Each team earned 3 points for a win in regular time, 2 points for a win after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out, 1 point for a loss after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out and 0 points for a loss in regular time. For goal difference purposes, matches decided after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out were treated as if the match had been decided after a golden goal (regardless of the actual number of goals scored). This point system is similar to the system used by the (real-life) IIHF for international ice hockey matches. The order of play in each group was pre-determined (the highest-seeded team would face the teams from Pot III, IV and II in that particular order), except for the Blue Group (the second and third round were switched because matches in the third week had to be played in the Netherlands) and the White Group (the first and second round were switched, because it was initially drawn as a group of three teams where the team from Pot I began with a bye).

The top-two teams of each group, the best third-place teams and one wild card team advanced to the second round (round of sixteen). A wild card was awarded to (one of) the leader(s) of the fair play classification that did not win their group. If two or more teams were level on points, the head-to-head result was the main tie-breaking criterium.

Wild card

One team could receive a wild card for the knockout stage, based on the fair play classification. The team with the best fair play record (5 points for each match played, 1 penalty point for each single yellow card and 3 penalty points for each red card) received the wild card and was seeded eighth (best non-group winner) for the round of sixteen.

Group winners (shaded blue in this ranking) could not receive the wild card (as they were already assured of a top-seven seeding). If multiple teams were eligible, the team with the best group stage results received the wild card. If no teams were eligible (all teams with the best fair play record were group winners), this spot in the knockout stage was transferred to the next-best third-placed team.

* Because the two teams with the best fair play record were both group winners, no wild card was awarded. The spot in the knockout stage was transferred to Als Hij Ons Maar Niet Fluit (next-best third-placed team).

Knockout Stage

The next stage of the tournament was the Knockout Stage. Sixteen teams qualified for this stage (the group winners and runners-up from all seven groups, accompanied by the two best third-placed teams). Teams tied on points would be ranked by the results between the top-three teams only.

Draw

The teams were seeded first to sixteenth, based on their result in the group stage (only results between the top-three teams were taken into account when teams were tied on points). In the second round, the highest-seeded teams would face the lowest-seeded teams at home. The teams received a new seeding after each round, which included the results of the previous match. This means that the bracket was not fixed and all teams could face each other in subsequent rounds, depending on how they performed. One exception was made for teams that qualified from the same group: these teams could not meet each other in the second round.

The quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals were played at a neutral venue. Lutjegast ArenA, the home stadium of Real Lutjegast (winners of Sealand Cup XXV), was selected as host of the final.

  • According to the fixtures, Appy United had to play FB Athletic, but they could not meet again (as both teams qualified from the Purple Group). The draw between FC Kneuzenparade and HetBeste determined that Appy United had to play FC Kneuzenparade and thus FB Athletic would play Sherlock's Boys.
