Sealand Cup XL was the fortieth edition of the Sealand Cup, the friendly competition of the Sealand federation and was held in (Dutch) season 58. The final was held at De Thuisfluiters Arena on 14 November 2018, between two first-time finalists. FC The Shade eventually defeated FC Atse. Defending champions Appy United was unable to defend their title and competed in the inaugural Prince Roy Cup instead.

Participating teams

Thirty-two teams participated in Sealand Cup XL, including eight previous champions. This was the highest number of participants since Sealand Cup XXV. There were no debutants. Six teams were still active in a national cup tournament at the time of the draw and could therefore not participate. Four of them entered the inaugural Prince Roy Cup instead. FC Yanost was disqualified during the group stage.

Seeding

The draw for the group stage was held in Heeze on 26 September 2018.

Teams were seeded based on their Sealand-Coefficient (new style). The Sealand-Coefficient was updated and solely determined by results in previous Sealand Cups (XIV to XXXIX), with results losing a quarter of their value each season.

Accompanied by this new style Sealand-Coefficient was that teams were divided in only two pots instead of four; the top-quarter (seeded teams) in Pot I and the remaining teams (unseeded) in Pot II. The four Belgian participants (indicated by the letter 'B') were automatically assigned to the Red Group. The remaining Dutch teams were drawn into the other seven groups, with teams from the same region not being drawn against each other. Fort Roughs Cup holder Sherlock's Boys could not be seeded lower than thirteenth (their final position in the previous season).

Group Stage

The Group Stage of the fortieth Sealand Cup ran from 3 to 17 October 2018.

Format

The teams in each group played each other in a single round-robin format, playing the other teams in the group once (at home or away). Each team earned 3 points for a win in regular time, 2 points for a win after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out, 1 point for a loss after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out and 0 points for a loss in regular time. For goal difference purposes, matches decided after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out were treated as if the match had been decided after a golden goal (regardless of the actual number of goals scored). This point system is similar to the system used by the (real-life) IIHF for international ice hockey matches. The order of play in each group was pre-determined (the Pot I team would face the middle-, lowest- and highest-seeded Pot II team in that order).

The top-two teams of each group advanced to the second round (round of sixteen). All other teams qualified for the Fort Roughs Cup. If two or more teams were level on points, the head-to-head result was the main tie-breaking criterium.

Wild card

One team could receive a wild card based on the fair play classification. Because there were exactly eight groups, the wild card did not automatically progress to the knock-out stage. The team with the best fair play record (10 points for each match played, 3 penalty points for each single yellow card and 9 penalty points for each red card) received the wild card and was seeded ninth (best non-group winner) if they finished runner-up in their group, or seventeenth (best non-qualifier) if they finished in third or fourth place in their group.

Group winners (shaded blue in this ranking) could not receive the wild card (as they were already assured of a top-eight seeding). If multiple teams were eligible, the team with the best group stage results received the wild card. If no teams were eligible (all teams with the best fair play record were group winners), there would have been no adjustment to the seedings.

Knockout Stage

The next stage of the tournament was the Knockout Stage. Sixteen teams qualified for this stage (the group winners and runners-up from all eight groups). Teams tied on points would be ranked by the results between the top-three teams only.

Draw

The teams were seeded first to sixteenth, based on their result in the group stage (only results between the top-three teams were taken into account when teams were tied on points). In the second round, the highest-seeded teams would face the lowest-seeded teams at home. The teams received a new seeding after each round, which included the results of the previous match. This means that the bracket was not fixed and all teams could face each other in subsequent rounds, depending on how they performed. One exception was made for teams that qualified from the same group: these teams could not meet each other in the second round.

The quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals were played at a neutral venue. De Thuisfluiters Arena, the home stadium of RKTVV (the most decorated team in Sealand Cup history), was selected as host of the final. The selected neutral venues for the knock-out stage were the home stadiums of eight of the nine most recent Sealand Cup champions.
