Sealand Cup XXXI was the thirty-first edition of the Sealand Cup, the friendly competition of the Sealand federation and was held in (Dutch) season 49. The final was held at Kings Castle on 3 February 2016, where RKTVV defeated Not That Good 2–1. Title holder Als Hij Ons Maar Niet Fluit was eliminated by RKTVV in the semi-finals.

Participating teams

23 teams participated in Sealand Cup XXXI, including six previous champions. For the second time (after Sealand Cup XIX), there were no debuting teams. FC Kneuzenparade, Malus Alces and R.C. Vozzko were still active in a national cup tournament at the time of the draw and could eventually not participate.

Seeding

The draw for the group stage was held in Heeze on 16 December 2015.

Teams were seeded into four pots based on their Sealand-Coefficient. The Sealand-Coefficient was determined by league level, league results, Hatstats and results in the previous three Sealand Cups. Teams from the same region could not be drawn against each other. Title holder Als Hij Ons Maar Niet Fluit was seeded into first position (regardless of their coefficient) and automatically drawn into the Golden Group.

Three teams were still active in a national cup tournament at the time of the draw. Malus Alces (the first team to enter) was included in the draw and automatically drawn in the group with three teams only. This team received a bye during the first group round and could enter the Sealand Cup after elimination from their national cup tournament. In case of a victory in their national cup match, Malus Alces could be replaced by FC Kneuzenparade or R.C. Vozzko. In the end, all three teams won their national cup match and Rohda Raalte was entered as a last-minute replacement.

Group Stage

The Group Stage of the thirty-first Sealand Cup ran from 23 December 2015 to 6 January 2016.

Format

The teams in each group played each other in a single round-robin format, playing the other teams in the group once (at home or away). Each team earned 3 points for a win in regular time, 2 points for a win after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out, 1 point for a loss after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out and 0 points for a loss in regular time. For goal difference purposes, matches decided after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out were treated as if the match had been decided after a golden goal (regardless of the actual number of goals scored). This point system is similar to the system used by the (real-life) IIHF for international ice hockey matches. The order of play in each group was pre-determined (the highest-seeded team would face the teams from Pot III, IV and II in that particular order, except for the Blue Group - which only contained three teams - where the highest-seeded team had a bye in the first round and faced the teams from Pot III and II in that particular order in the remaining rounds).

The top-two teams of each group and the four best third-placed teams advanced to the second round (round of sixteen). If two or more teams were level on points, the head-to-head result was the main tie-breaking criterium.

Knockout Stage

The next stage of the tournament was the Knockout Stage. Sixteen teams qualified for this stage (the group winners and runners-up from all six groups, accompanied by the four best third-placed teams). Teams tied on points would be ranked by the results between the top-three teams only.

Draw

The teams were seeded first to sixteenth, based on their result in the group stage (only results between the top-three teams were taken into account when teams were tied on points). In the second round, the highest-seeded teams would face the lowest-seeded teams at home. The teams received a new seeding after each round, which included the results of the previous match. This means that the bracket was not fixed and all teams could face each other in subsequent rounds, depending on how they performed. One exception was made for teams that qualified from the same group: these teams could not meet each other in the second round.

The quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals were played at a neutral venue. Kings Castle, the home stadium of Kings Squad (team with the highest number of championships), was selected as host of the final.

Note ‡: teams in the Blue Group could not play against a fourth team and were awarded three points in the seedings.

  • According to the fixtures, Sherlock's Boys had to play Rode Ster Dordrecht, but they could not meet again (as both teams qualified from the Green Group). The draw between Bal op 't Dak '10 and AC Luna Spirit determined that Sherlock's Boys had to play AC Luna Spirit and thus Rode Ster Dordrecht would play HetBeste.
  • According to the fixtures, RKTVV had to play FC Sammie de Cavia, but they could not meet again (as both teams qualified from the Red Group). FC Sammie de Cavia was automatically switched with Rohda Raalte, since they were the only available team that had to play a group winner already. Therefore RKTVV had to play Rohda Raalte and thus FC Sammie de Cavia would play Angels United.
  • For seeding purposes, the unplayed match between HetBeste and Zwitsal Boys was recorded as 5–0, but Zwitsal Boys was placed back to eighteenth place for having played only two actual matches.
