Sealand Cup XLVIII was the forty-eighth edition of the Sealand Cup, the friendly competition of the Sealand federation and was held in (Dutch) season 66. The final was held at KNGF Homeground on 2 May 2021, where Royal Sun And Evil FC defeated FC Jaapo 4–1 to win their first Sealand Cup. It was the first ever Sealand Cup final without a Dutch team, the first time since Sealand Cup XXII (26 seasons ago) that a Belgian team won the trophy and the third consecutive time that FC Jaapo lost the final. Title holders Azzato's Mighty Heroes did not participate.

Participating teams

Thirty-six teams participated in Sealand Cup XLVII, including nine previous champions. MK Donssnor and Theseus1 made their début. Two teams (Ad Maiorem Mei Gloriam and Angels United) were still active in a national cup tournament at the time of the draw and could not participate (the Prince Roy Cup did not go ahead, as there were only two eligible teams). Title holders Azzato's Mighty Heroes did not enter, as they wished to focus on their participation in the Dutch Consolation Cup (which they eventually won).

Seeding

The draw for the group stage was held in Heeze on 10 March 2021.

Teams were seeded based on their Sealand-Coefficient, which was solely determined by results in all previous Sealand Cups, with results losing a quarter of their value each season. The teams were divided in two pots; the top-quarter (seeded teams) in Pot I and the remaining teams (unseeded) in Pot II.

Teams from the same region could not be drawn against each other. Fort Roughs Cup holder Kennemerland 6 could not be seeded lower than seventeenth (their final position in the previous season).

Note ★: KHO Peizegem-Merchtem did not confirm their participation until after the draw, so only 35 teams were entered into the draw originally. This resulted in one group that contained just three teams. KHO Peizegem-Merchtem was automatically placed into that group when they joined the competition. Their possible participation was already taken into account during the draw; it was not possible for the three-team-group (which turned out to be the Blue Group) to contain any other foreign team. They are therefore included in these seedings.

Group Stage

The Group Stage of the forty-eighth Sealand Cup ran from 16 to 31 March 2021.

Format

The teams in each group played each other in a single round-robin format, playing the other teams in the group once (at home or away). Each team earned 3 points for a win in regular time, 2 points for a win after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out, 1 point for a loss after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out and 0 points for a loss in regular time. For goal difference purposes, matches decided after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out were treated as if the match had been decided after a golden goal (regardless of the actual number of goals scored). This point system is similar to the system used by the (real-life) IIHF for international ice hockey matches.

The order of play in each group was pre-determined (the Pot I team would face the middle-, lowest- and highest-seeded Pot II team in that order), except for the Blue Group (which originally contained just three teams).

The top-two teams of each group, the best third-place teams and one wild card team advanced to the second round (round of twenty-four). All other teams qualified for the Fort Roughs Cup. If two or more teams were level on points, the head-to-head result was the main tie-breaking criterium.

Wild card

One team could receive a wild card for the knockout stage, based on the fair play classification. The team with the best fair play record (10 points for each match played, 3 penalty points for each single yellow card and 9 penalty points for each red card) received the wild card and was seeded tenth (best non-group winner) for the round of twenty-four.

Group winners (shaded blue in this ranking) could not receive the wild card (as they were already assured of a top-nine seeding). If multiple teams were eligible, the team with the best group stage results received the wild card. If no teams were eligible (all teams with the best fair play record were group winners), this spot in the knockout stage was transferred to the next-best third-placed team.

* Because Als Hij Ons Maar Niet Fluit was already qualified to the second round (as best third-placed team), their spot was transferred to Theseus1 (next-best third-placed team).


Knockout Stage

The next stage of the tournament was the Knockout Stage. Twenty-four teams qualified for this stage (the group winners and runners-up from all nine groups, accompanied by the six best third-placed teams). Teams tied on points would be ranked by the results between the top-three teams only.

The number of qualified teams (24) was not a power of two. Therefore it was possible for losing teams to advance to the next stage as a lucky loser. After the second round, two teams qualified as a lucky loser (leaving fourteen teams in contention) and after the third round, one team qualified as a lucky loser (leaving eight teams in contention). From that point on, the knockout stage was a true knock-out format.

Draw

The teams were seeded first to twenty-fourth, based on their result in the group stage (only results between the top-three teams were taken into account when teams were tied on points). In the second round, the highest-seeded teams would face the lowest-seeded teams at home. The teams received a new seeding after each round, which included the results of the previous match. This means that the bracket was not fixed and all teams could face each other in subsequent rounds, depending on how they performed. One exception was made for teams that qualified from the same group: these teams could not meet each other in the second round.

The third round, quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals were played at a neutral venue. KNGF Homeground, the home stadium of Physios United, was selected as host of the final. This venue won a two-tier poll to determine the final host. Other nominated stadiums for this poll were Het Weiland (who received the small final), Thunderdome (who received a semi-final), Waaier (who received a semi-final), De Klôkjebruier, Zatarrian Base and Sportpark Ajax Sneek. All nominated venues were located in the Northern Netherlands (Drenthe, Frisia and Groningen) after that region won the initial poll to select a host region for the knock-out stage.

Play-Off

The small final in two of the last three Sealand Cups had to be postponed into the next season. To avoid a repeat of this scenario, a play-off was organised between the losing quarterfinalists, with the winner of the play-off being eligible to enter the small final, if necessary. Malus Alces and Paninis Eleven pulled out of the play-off, so it was played as a single match between the remaining two losing quarterfinalists. The play-off ultimately had no effect on the remainder of the competition, but it did allow FC Kneuzenparade to win the Fair Play Award.
