Sealand Cup XLIII was the forty-third edition of the Sealand Cup, the friendly competition of the Sealand federation and was held in (Dutch) season 61. The final was held at Colosseum Älgsafarium on 16 October 2019, where Real Lutjegast (previous season's losing finalist) won their second Sealand Cup by defeating FC Jaapo 3–1. It was the third consecutive time that the winner had lost the final in the previous season. Defending champion FB Athletic was unable to defend their title and competed in the Prince Roy Cup instead.

Participating teams

Twenty-eight teams participated in Sealand Cup XLIII, including nine previous champions. FC Zeuvebultelaand made their début. Five teams were still active in a national cup tournament at the time of the draw and competed in the Prince Roy Cup instead.

Seeding

The draw for the group stage was held in Heeze on 28 August 2019.

Teams were seeded based on their Sealand-Coefficient, which was solely determined by results in all previous Sealand Cups, with results losing a quarter of their value each season. The teams were divided in two pots; the top-quarter (seeded teams) in Pot I and the remaining teams (unseeded) in Pot II.

Teams from the same region could not be drawn against each other. Fort Roughs Cup holder Malus Alces could not be seeded lower than seventeenth (their final position in the previous season).

Group Stage

The Group Stage of the forty-third Sealand Cup ran from 3 to 18 September 2019.

Format

The teams in each group played each other in a single round-robin format, playing the other teams in the group once (at home or away). Each team earned 3 points for a win in regular time, 2 points for a win after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out, 1 point for a loss after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out and 0 points for a loss in regular time. For goal difference purposes, matches decided after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out were treated as if the match had been decided after a golden goal (regardless of the actual number of goals scored). This point system is similar to the system used by the (real-life) IIHF for international ice hockey matches.

The order of play in each group was pre-determined (the Pot I team would face the middle-, lowest- and highest-seeded Pot II team in that order), except for the Purple Group (the second and third round were switched because matches in the third week had to be played in the Netherlands). Due to an organisatorial error, this exception was not made in the Orange and Yellow Groups (where the non-Dutch team was the highest-seeded Pot II team).

The top-two teams of each group, the best third-place teams and one wild card team advanced to the second round (round of sixteen). A wild card was awarded to (one of) the leader(s) of the fair play classification that did not win their group. All other teams qualified for the Fort Roughs Cup. If two or more teams were level on points, the head-to-head result was the main tie-breaking criterium.

Wild card

One team could receive a wild card for the knockout stage, based on the fair play classification. The team with the best fair play record (10 points for each match played, 3 penalty points for each single yellow card and 9 penalty points for each red card) received the wild card and was seeded eighth (best non-group winner) for the round of sixteen.

Group winners (shaded blue in this ranking) could not receive the wild card (as they were already assured of a top-seven seeding). If multiple teams were eligible, the team with the best group stage results received the wild card. If no teams were eligible (all teams with the best fair play record were group winners), this spot in the knockout stage was transferred to the next-best third-placed team.

Knockout Stage

The next stage of the tournament was the Knockout Stage. Sixteen teams qualified for this stage (the group winners and runners-up from all seven groups, accompanied by the two best third-placed teams). Teams tied on points would be ranked by the results between the top-three teams only.

Draw

The teams were seeded first to sixteenth, based on their result in the group stage (only results between the top-three teams were taken into account when teams were tied on points). In the second round, the highest-seeded teams would face the lowest-seeded teams at home. The teams received a new seeding after each round, which included the results of the previous match. This means that the bracket was not fixed and all teams could face each other in subsequent rounds, depending on how they performed. One exception was made for teams that qualified from the same group: these teams could not meet each other in the second round.

The quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals were played at a neutral venue. Colosseum Älgsafarium, the home stadium of Malus Alces, was selected as host of the final. This venue finished second in a public poll to determine the final host (poll winner Galg & Waard was unavailable). Other finalists in the public poll were de Tudorel Udreskoe Arena (awarded a semi-final) and Den Akker van Peizegem.

  • According to the fixtures, FC Kneuzenparade had to play Zatarra Football Club, but they could not meet again (as both teams qualified from the Purple Group). Zatarra Football Club was switched with HetBeste (as they had the most similar qualification record) and played instead against Utrechtseboys themselves.
