Sealand Cup XLV was the forty-fifth edition of the Sealand Cup, the friendly competition of the Sealand federation and was held in (Dutch) season 63. The final was held at Het Kuipje on 31 May 2020, where defending champions FC Jaapo defeated Als Hij Ons Maar Niet Fluit 5–1 to win their second Sealand Cup.

Participating teams

Thirty-five teams participated in Sealand Cup XLV, including eleven previous champions. This was a record-tying number of previous champions to compete in the tournament. Bonnies FC and Jostifc made their début. Three teams were still active in a national cup tournament at the time of the draw and could not participate. Because this number was lower than four, the Prince Roy Cup was not organised for these teams. FC Sammie de Cavia withdrew after the draw and thus did not participate.

Seeding

The draw for the group stage was held in Heeze on 8 April 2020.

Teams were seeded based on their Sealand-Coefficient, which was solely determined by results in all previous Sealand Cups, with results losing a quarter of their value each season. The teams were divided in two pots; the top-quarter (seeded teams) in Pot I and the remaining teams (unseeded) in Pot II.

Teams from the same region could not be drawn against each other. Title holder FC Jaapo was seeded into Pot I (regardless of their coefficient) and automatically drawn into the Golden Group. Fort Roughs Cup holder Malus Alces could not be seeded lower than twenty-first (their final position in the previous season).

Group Stage

The Group Stage of the forty-fifth Sealand Cup ran from 14 to 29 April 2020.

Format

The teams in each group played each other in a single round-robin format, playing the other teams in the group once (at home or away). Each team earned 3 points for a win in regular time, 2 points for a win after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out, 1 point for a loss after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out and 0 points for a loss in regular time. For goal difference purposes, matches decided after extra time or after a penalty shoot-out were treated as if the match had been decided after a golden goal (regardless of the actual number of goals scored). This point system is similar to the system used by the (real-life) IIHF for international ice hockey matches.

The order of play in each group was pre-determined (the Pot I team would face the middle-, lowest- and highest-seeded Pot II team in that order), except for the Yellow, Blue and White Groups (the first and third round were switched because matches in the third week had to be played in the Netherlands).

The top-two teams of each group, the best third-place teams and one wild card team advanced to the second round (round of twenty-four). All other teams qualified for the Fort Roughs Cup. If two or more teams were level on points, the head-to-head result was the main tie-breaking criterium.

Wild card

One team could receive a wild card for the knockout stage, based on the fair play classification. The team with the best fair play record (10 points for each match played, 3 penalty points for each single yellow card and 9 penalty points for each red card) received the wild card and was seeded tenth (best non-group winner) for the round of twenty-four.

Group winners (shaded blue in this ranking) could not receive the wild card (as they were already assured of a top-nine seeding). If multiple teams were eligible, the team with the best group stage results received the wild card. If no teams were eligible (all teams with the best fair play record were group winners), this spot in the knockout stage was transferred to the next-best third-placed team.

* Because Timbo Team was already qualified to the second round (as runner-up), their spot was transferred to Incisa D'Oro (next-best third-placed team).

Knockout Stage

The next stage of the tournament was the Knockout Stage. Twenty-four teams qualified for this stage (the group winners and runners-up from all nine groups, accompanied by the six best third-placed teams). Teams tied on points would be ranked by the results between the top-three teams only.

The number of qualified teams (24) was not a power of two. Therefore it was possible for losing teams to advance to the next stage as a lucky loser. After the second round, two teams qualified as a lucky loser (leaving fourteen teams in contention) and after the third round, one team qualified as a lucky loser (leaving eight teams in contention). From that point on, the knockout stage was a true knock-out format.

Draw

The teams were seeded first to twenty-fourth, based on their result in the group stage (only results between the top-three teams were taken into account when teams were tied on points). In the second round, the highest-seeded teams would face the lowest-seeded teams at home. The teams received a new seeding after each round, which included the results of the previous match. This means that the bracket was not fixed and all teams could face each other in subsequent rounds, depending on how they performed. One exception was made for teams that qualified from the same group: these teams could not meet each other in the second round.

The third round, quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals were played at a neutral venue. Het Kuipje, the home stadium of Incisa D'Oro, was selected as host of the final. This venue finished second in a poll to determine the final host (poll winner Het Kuipje was unavailable). Other nominated stadiums for this poll were Angels United Arena, La Via Nostra, Sportpark Den Donk, Waaier and De Thuisfluiters Arena.
