Cupa Brăilei (Brăila Cup) is an unofficial, regional competition organized for teams from the Brăila region. It is one of the largest friendly tournaments in Romania, with 64 teams (128 are invited) participating in the competition. The first three editions of the cup were held between 2005 and 2006 on a small scale, each featuring 16 teams and no notable prizes.

The rejuvenation of the cup began in January 2010. Since then, 45 editions have taken place. The number of contestants gradually increased—from 32 to 64, and later to 80—while the prize pool experienced impressive growth, from 12 months of Hattrick Supporter awarded in the 4th edition to over 35 months in the 6th. In recent editions, only an honorary cup has been offered to the winner.

The main condition for registration is that all participating teams must be from the Brăila region.

Until the 27th edition (including), the tournament was held during the second part of the official Hattrick season (Weeks 7–15). Starting with the 28th edition, the schedule has become variable.

History

The first edition of the cup was organized by Ad0nis, who also went on to win the tournament. The competition took place between 12 October 2005 and 16 November 2005. Sixteen teams were divided into four groups. Dacia Unirea Brăila won the cup, defeating F.C RapiD, managed by Arbitru, with the score of 1–0. There were no prizes.

The second edition took place between 22 February 2006 and 29 March 2006 and was conducted by bogdancon, manager of the team Squadra Merluciu. Sixteen teams participated in the competition, divided into four groups of four, with the top two teams from each group advancing. The winner of the tournament was Hattrick Club ConInstal, owned by Don-c_alexro, who defeated F.C. Braila, managed by citizen, with a score of 3–1. The winner was awarded 3 months of the Hattrick Supporter feature.

Again, bogdancon was the organizer. This edition marked the final staging of the Brăila Cup before the new era began in 2010. The competition started on 4 October 2006, using the same group stage format. The prize remained unchanged: 3 months of Hattrick Supporter for the winner. The final took place on 8 November 2006, and Ghosts were crowned champions. The team managed by Justuletz defeated Trupele anti-dero, owned by gogu_paleologu, with a dominant 4–0 victory.

After four years of silence, Magneto revived the regional community by initiating a brand-new edition of the Brăila Cup. On 24 February 2010, the fourth season of the cup began, featuring 32 teams. Magneto's initiative proved to be highly significant, as the local community began to grow steadily, with users becoming increasingly active. The prize pool reached 12 months of Hattrick Supporter, allowing not only the winner but also the top three finishers to be rewarded. Additional prizes were offered for the top scorer, the best defense, and the best offense. The top scorer also received the Terente Trophy, a symbolic award named after the notorious bandit famous for his manhood. (This was the only season when the special prizes were awarded in the form of HT Supporter; in the editions that followed, winners received books.) The 32 teams were divided into eight groups of four. The winner of Season 4 was Oktay, manager of FC SteauaBR. The Turkish-descent wonder kid overpowered the_champion, owner of Skulblaka Champions, in a thrilling final. Final score: 5–3. The prediction contest known as Prono Cupa Brăilei was also held for the first time. Before each leg of the competition, five of the most balanced matches were selected, and participants placed their bets accordingly.

The success of the fourth edition could be seen at the start of the new season. The number of competitors doubled, so the teams were divided into sixteen groups of four. Thirty-two teams qualified for the first knock-out phase. The prize pool increased slightly, reaching 15 months of HT Supporter. The group stage started on 9 June 2010. During this season, the weekly Hattrick meeting tradition was born. Every Wednesday, members of the local Hattrick community meet, talk about Hattrick, drink a lot of beer, and watch the cup games in different pubs in Brăila or Bucharest. The competition was dominated by FC Ciumpalacii, managed by Jok3r, who registered eight wins in eight games. In the final, he met Squadra Merluciu. The match was very balanced, but the then economics management student emerged victorious: 3–1. This is the first season when the Magneto Trophy was awarded to the team that totalized the most goals scored and received. The trophy was named in honor of the man who brought Brăila members together.

Edition 6

The sixth edition of the competition was the last one organized by Magneto before he took a break, and it marked the moment when the cup reached its peak. The prize pool was the largest in history, with no less than 1,140 days of Hattrick Supporter at stake. The tournament was sponsored by seventeen local users. The group stage began on 29 September 2010, with 64 teams at the start. The cup began to gain greater notoriety—more than fifteen people took part in each meeting in Bucharest during the semifinals and finals. The winner of the competition was the unseeded team Frunza United, managed by Frunza, who came all the way from Pot 3 to make history. The final match was unbalanced, with the current cup holder defeating Blu3Cosm1n, owner of Blu3 Braila, by seven goals to none. A real trophy was awarded to the winner during the final meeting in the capital city, on 17 November, 2010. The runner-up, however, was widely mocked for not fielding his best eleven—a decision many interpreted as an act of pure cowardice on the biggest stage.

Edition 7

The seventh staging of the cup marked the retirement of Magneto from the leadership of the community. The competition was now conducted by Frunza, the top dog of Season 6, who brought a stricter approach and introduced several innovations. One of the key changes was the implementation of a new team coefficient system, which determined the pot placement of each team in the draw based on past performance. As a result, the old ranking system was abolished. Two parallel contests accompanied the cup: the fourth edition of the betting game Prono Cupa Brăilei and a brand-new original quiz focused on the history, geography, and culture of the Brăila region.

Season 7 was the last edition held in this format. The 64 teams were divided into sixteen groups of four, with the top two advancing to the knockout stage. The draw took place on 29 December 2010 and was attended by over 15 people. The prize pool remained high at 930 days of Hattrick Supporter, distributed to all teams reaching the Round of 16 or further. All sixty-four spots in the cup were filled in less than 19 hours from registration opening—a new record. The matches began on Wednesday, 19 January 2011, and the final was played on 9 March, 2011.

The runner-up of Season 4, Skulblaka Champions, finally claimed the trophy after the most thrilling final to date, defeating the bookies’ favorite, Magneto, owner of C.F. Brăila. After 90 minutes, the score stood at 3–3. In the 109th minute, Matusalém Domingues scored the golden goal, bringing eternal glory to the_champion.

Edition 8

Main article: Cupa Brăilei Ediţia 8

Season eight was the first to adopt the current competition format. A high number of registration requests made it clear that the number of participating teams needed to increase. As a result, 80 teams entered the tournament. Sixteen of them were automatically qualified for the group stage, based on the team coefficient. The remaining 64 teams competed in a preliminary round, divided into four pots (also based on coefficient) and drawn accordingly. The 32 winners from this round joined the 16 pre-qualified teams in the group stage.

This stage also saw a format change: the 48 teams were split into eight groups of six, with the top two from each group advancing to the knockout rounds. The preliminary round took place on 4 May 2011, and the final was played on 6 July 2011.

Frunza, manager of Frunza United, claimed his second title after an all-winners final, defeating the_champion, manager of Skulblaka Champions, with a convincing 6–2 scoreline. Beroe Ostrov secured third place after a tight match against keep---walking.
